Very solid brew with a nice malty smell. When you take a sip, it’s decently malty and more bitter than you expect at the finish. Oh, and the ruby-brown color is attractive. entertheiceman (242), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

It was better than expected with a decent malt quality to it and gorgeous color. One thing I couldn’t get over ,though, was the carbonation. Very carbonated and it didn’t seem natural. Of a wickedly strong and ful-flavoured beer. And the name has been notorious amongst beer-enthusiasts for ages. Well, I guess it’s mainly due to the fact, that this was one of the first successful US microbrews. Regarded by it’s effort as a beer this is rather peaceful. Dark brown, perhaps slightly copperish, neat and decent head. Soft and lightly sweet nut-character without much bitterness. A very pleasant beer outdoors on a warm night in Greenwich Village. highlandlad (1268), Sydney, Australia
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Mar 13, 2005 The beer that helped launch America’s craft brewing revolution seems a little tired these days. It’s a still a flavoursome, well-made brew, but the benchmark has risen so high that there’s no real reason to choose this any more. Poured a ruby-brown colour with a disappointing head. Light aroma has caramel/toffee characters. It’s a quenching ale, medium-bodied, with subtle toffee notes, some nutty malt and a light bitter finish. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 9, 2005 Citrus-grapefruit, nuts, and bitter. All and all a good beer just not what I’d consider a brown ale. Ends a little Sour hops at the end are ok Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA

Poured amber with a big fizzy head, that did not last. Sweet/sour malty aroma. Caramel and sour, nothing great, but not bad. GuilTTy (538), Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Mar 1, 2005 There was I time when I thought this was a very good beer - but that time also coincided with too many occasions when I would drink an industrial macrobrew without too much of a fight. That said... pours a medium mahogany with a small head and little lacing. Malty aroma with a hint of pine & vanilla. More hops in the flavor than is evident from the aroma with some roasted malty sweetness. Nothing unique or memorable about the finish. In fact, nothing memorable about this beer at all except for the memories I have of the days before my beer taste buds grew up. jefcon (1004), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Feb 28, 2005 Reddish in the glass, with a thin and diminishing head. Robust enough on the tongue, but a little rough and tinny. The aroma and taste of hops are there, but aren’t exceptional. There is an artificial sweetness around the edges. A good enough drinkin’ beer, but nothing special.
