Gusler (2656), Tucson, Arizona, USA Oct 24, 2001 Finally, the ’Aged Petrus Pale’ has arrived, although I have sampled to date 3947 different beers over the last 40 plus years, I want the 1000th on ’Ratebeer’ to be special, and it is.
The Pour
A some what dark gold color, moderate to generous white head.
The Nose
That of a fine wine, malt tones are noticeable, and a tartness, and as would be assumed a certain ’oakyness’.
The taste
The front is tart/sour with traces of a underlying maltiness, the middle a bit of sweetness amongst the sour, light to medium in body, highly acidic and tingly, little carbonation, the finish is moderately dry, some hops noticed.
My Opinion
One damn fine beer, I’ve not sampled a great number of ’Red/Sour’ beers, but I do like this beer. Trust me it was worth the wait.
ucusty (1062), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Aug 29, 2008 Clear gold pour with fluffy white head and picturesque lace. Yeasty tart aroma. Oak and green apples dry finish RichJ7 (886), Cullman, Alabama, USA Aug 28, 2008 Golden color with a thick, fluffy white head. Yeasty Belgian nose, very fruity. Flavor is tart and similar to a Flanders Red. Very crisp. Lots of bittersweet fruit character. Very good. PaulHegedus (64), Brampton, Ontario, Canada Aug 27, 2008 Bottle at Smokeless Joe, July 2008. Taste is quite sour and tart with a hint of cherry and a long, sour finish. This is much more sour than Oud Brun. And much better. thornecb (1065), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Aug 17, 2008 Pours bright gold into a snifter. Bright white head leaves sheet lacing as it recedes to skim surface. Sour citrus aromas. Full sour fruit. Puckering yet crisp. wyzzywyz22 (325), Wirral, Merseyside, England Aug 9, 2008 Bottle, Belgian Belly, Chorlton. Poured a clear true golden colour with a medium white head. Aroma was intensely woody mixed with sour green apple.
Flavour had obvious evidence of the oak barrel aging. Wasn’t overtly sour and struck a good balance between the woodiness and the fruit. Definite cider parallels. Finish was sour if a little short.
