Head is full, fluffy and of reddish-brown tinted bubbles. Smell is all flemish sour, after I believed this one to be a brown. Sweet and acidic, it makes the nose pucker. Taste is strong balsamic vingegar, concord grapes, on top of a healthy amout of caramel. Nice flavor base. Subtle oak rounds out the palate, keeping the aftertaste mellow like an afternoon smoke instead of tannic, like some sours tend to be. For me this is enjoyable, but it is somewhat of a tweener, as the palate has some belgian dubbel ale qualities to it that aren’t apart to sours. Damn good beer, though...and interesting! | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 20, 2005 Drank from a bottle I stole between dave & blake. I couldn’t smell much from it, a tiny hoppy piece but not much else, camp fire dominated my nose. Palate was nice and well coated. Felt acidic but not carbonated. Cask aged brown ale... ok.. doesn’t taste much like a cask beer or a brown ale. Had a light tart/sour piece, some oaky notes and hints of a light malt w/ honey. Overall it was pretty good but I thought it would have been bigger. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 18, 2005 Bottle. Very little carbonation. Clear brown-red body. Smoky, light aroma. The lack of carbonation makes it difficult to smell. Fruity, honey-malt flavor with floral and sweet woody notes. The flavor is nice but not terribly big, it’s like a session wood-aged beer. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 18, 2005 (bottle) Dark reddish brown colour with a moderate foamy tanned head. Sour and woody malty aroma. Very mild and smooth mouthfeel; light to medium bodied, which is a bit disappointing, but anyway well-balanced. Soft sweet cherry-fruity and malty start with a vinous, slightly bitter and dry finish. Aromatic and flavourful brew. grat (433), ST. Louis, Missouri, USA

Literally the hed was slightly purple or red. Awesome. Smells like rusty iron and grapes. Immediately able to taste the oak aging. The oak flavor runs papery and smooth across your tongue. Also tastes like red wine. Aftertaste. Mediciney and rusted.
Good brew very drinkable.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 12, 2005 Bottle: Aroma is mostly sweet and sour cherry. Nice, but not as strong as the better Flemish Sours. Pours a dark reddish-orange with some hints of transparency. Small off-white head quickly fades to a ring. Sourness/tartness is a weak compared to many Flemish Sours. Flavor is sweet cherry with slight hints of tartness. Finishes with a moderate wood presence and a touch of flowery bitterness. Doesn’t compare to the Aged Pale.
