The nose on this beer is very inviting. Sweet malt aromas marry with strong aromas of pepper, and earthy yeastiness. Petrus Speciale is spiced with coriander, and it is quite evident in this beer. The palate is firm with more good malt flavors on the palate, with a nice back drop of bready/yeasty flavor, and subtle hints of pepper. This beer finishes with more good malt up front, then is balanced with some nice hop bitterness, and a slightly sour/vinous note.
This is a fantastic beer to have with a meal, and would work well with many gourmet dishes. I matched one with a meal of Blanquette de Veau, which is veal tips slowly braised in white wine, mushrooms, and cream. The combinations of flavors in the dish, and the malty/yeasty/peppery flavors of the Petrus worked extremely well. Seek this beer out if you can find it. It can be a bit hard to find in some markets, but well worth looking for. mgermani (865), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 12, 2007 Pours a clear apricot-amber with a small layer of foam, great lacing, and an aroma of sudsy hops, green grapes, and dry white wine. Flavour is lightly sweet with more green grape and a soft, dry and slightly tart finish. Carbonation is soda-pop-esque, body is creamy but dry to finish. This is a very pleasant beer, much better than their Oud Bruin. Would accompany food very well. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 1, 2004 A rich copper and full of spritziness. A medium foamy head that sits around for quite a while. A fresh, fruity and mouthwatering aroma that led to a first sip that was eagerly anticipated. Tasty, a bit thinner than I had hoped for but a tasty and smooth and fairly dry aftertaste. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 24, 2005 Yeast bread and grain aroma to this one. Clear golden body with a big white foamy head. Seeing it’s close to Christmas the carbination bubbles remined me a snow globe. Some lacing left on glabut not till half the glass was gone. Mellow flavor of lemon citrus and very enjyable beer. ryan (1780), Beltsville, Maryland, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 22, 2008 Hazy, light amber with a large, frothy off-white head. Decent head retention with a good amount of lace. Bready, doughy nose with lots of vienna-like malt, hints of pear, grapes and honey. The flavor is very lightly sweet, just lightly bitter with floral and herbal hops, light caramel, dough and golden raisins. Medium/light body is round with moderate carbonation. Very quaffable. Could pass as a Belgian style octoberfest. Not a world beater, but I can’t figure out these super low scores for the life of me. beerguy101 (3946), Newark, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 21, 2005 This ale pours a yellow gold color from a 300ml bottle. Large sized, long lasting, white foamy head. Aroma is hoppy, floral, citrusy and grainy. A medium bodied Belgian Ale. Malts are fruity and sweet. Hops are citrusy and somewhat bitter. This is kind of a strange beer, its part Belgian and part Lager. Yeasty, hoppy and crisp tasting, its just a weird juxtaposition of flavors. Clean and crisp. Lots of grain flavors. Sort of a Pale Lagers goes Belgian. Its weird, but I sort of like it. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is dry and crisp. Aftertaste is bitter. Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 11, 2005 One of the six Petrus beers from a gift pack, this one pours a clear amber color with a pertinent light tan frothy head that after depletion leaves a fine veil of lace upon the glass. Nose has a crisp citrus like front wit ha bit of malt at the back; start is somewhat sweet, nice grain presence and the top light to moderate in feel. Finish is sternly acidic, the hops benign in their spiciness, desert bone dry, and a fine brew to start off a Sunday afternoon of sampling.
