My sample was obviously in better nick than Spiesy’s. And it certainly made a change from a run of pale bitter/golden ales that have dominated what I have been drinking recently. Deep, almost opaque chocolate brown colour. Lasting pale beige head. Definite smoky notes in the aroma. The flavour is 100% mocha - chocolate and coffee. Smooth, soft finish. I was going to say that the body was rather thin for a stout but, now I get here, I discover it’s a mild. A bit of a hybrid I would say, and quite strong for a stout. Rather nice. Cask (handpump), Head of Steam, Euston, London NW1.

Cask Conditioned, at The First Hussar, York, Yorkshire.
Brown with a beige head not in the best of conditions. Rather shit actually. Subtle dusty malt flavours, similar to stale old chocolate.
