Spectacularly well-constructed brewpub dunkelweizen, though not approaching the greatness of their Hefe.
I like:
Not all that pretty dark brown. Strongly estery nose loaded with banana purée, but also grainy toast, woodsy grapes, earth cherries. Quite fruity in the genre and not as roasty as I would have thought, more dust than actual roast flavours from the creative yeast strain. Full-bodied.
I dislike:
Feels less clean than the regular hefe, more powdery, more wet, dustier. Almost too carbonated, biting. The head departs far quicklier than the hefe’s. Cornfield (4972), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA

It’s a cloudy dark chestnut brew with a bubbly, quickly disappearing tan head. It smells of aging bananas, dark caramel, wheat, and clove. Fairly smooth & creamy drinking. The flavor’s much the same as the aroma except that the bananas seem just a little older. Very good.

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 2, 2007 On tap at the brewpub. The body was a very cloudy brown with a light khaki colored head. The aroma had some strong bananas. There were also hints of vanilla and peaches. The taste had more strong bananas, but I had trouble finidng much else to taste. A decent version of the style, but I would like to see a little more complexity. BBB63 (4267), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 31, 2005 Updated: Feb 25, 2005I had this again during this visit and liked it as much if not more than the first time. A wonderfully example of the style---Original Review: Tap and served in an Aventinus styled glass (nice touch): Murky coppery brown hue with a nice off-white creamy head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of banana, clove, lemongrass esters with a good carmelized malt background, a bit earthy too. The taste is very true to style with equal parts weizen and dunkel working together for balance. Crisp fruity character on top of sweet malts with lingering acidic and spicy tones. The feel is sharp and refreshing, even if a bit heavy and doughy towards the end. I liked this a lot and would recommend to any weizen fan. Ughsmash (4074), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 28, 2007 On tap at Piece... gotta be one of (if not the best) dunkelweizens out there! Just a wonderful presentation of it... deep murky brown with a long-lasting cap of creamy off-white head... in a tall, curvy glass! Semi-sweet chocolate first graces the nose.. with light molasses, deep banana, peppery spices, and other dark sweetness immediately behind. Semi-sweet chocolate and other dark sugars at the flavor core.. darker banana and peppery spice notes eminate outward and an earthy bitterness emerges near the mildly warm finish. Enjoyed the stronger spicy accents... medium-bodied with boatloads of flavor.. smooth middle. World-class concoction here! thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 26, 2005 This draft brew from the brewery poured a small sized head of medium sized mostly diminishing light brown colored bubbles that left behind a fair lacing. The body contained soft carbonation, was opaque and brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of good dunkel weizen style with crisp smoky malty fruity . Its mouth feel is initially tingly with a lingering tingly palate and a aftertaste. Its flavor contained maltfruit mild banana mild brown malt mild spice notes. egajdzis (3636), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA
