hombrepalo (745), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 23, 2009 On draught at the pizzeria Tuesday. Poured a deep brownish reddish color with khaki head. Smells strong of roasted malts and some coffee. The flavors are the same the mouthfeel is what gets me to rate this less than stellar, it is too watery for my liking. Could be better. PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Aug 25, 2009 Tap at the brewpub: Rusty deep brown with copper highlights. Has a charred barley aroma with little depth. The body is lacking a bit with spirtzy carbonation. The flavor has evident roasted barley upfront with a brief cocoa note in the middle. There’s a touch of vague smokiness toward the back as it warms that saves it a bit, but overall it’s a bit thin and lacking malt depth. BeerBunker (607), Burbank, Illinois, USA Aug 16, 2009 On tap at Piece. Pours black with an off-white head. Aroma is of chocolate, malt, oat, and slight coffe. The aroma is very subdued. Taste is of chocolate, oat, malt, and some coffee. Mouthfeel is light and has too uch carbonation. Lingering taste of oat and coffee. The body is a little thin, but it does go down easy. I could easily drink multiple pours of it and be fine with it. BeerBelcher (930), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 11, 2009 I hold the Piece brewpub in very high regard, so when the server recommended this beer because another on the menu was out, I went along. But I thought this beer was a bit of a miss. A touch flat and extremely mild in flavor, it seemed to me to be pretty boring, which isn’t what I’ve come to expect from this brewery due to both experience and reputation.
Body was black and thin in appearance with a medium amount of head. Aroma was a touch roasty, but mostly imaginary. Flavor was oat-like, but again so mild as to not be anything other than disappointing.
This beer hasn’t shaken my faith in this brewpub’s ability to make excellent beers, but this is one I’d counsel you to avoid.
I had this on tap at the brewery and pizzeria. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland May 11, 2009 Tap at Piece Post DLD ... deep red brown ... sweet toasted malt nose ... big soft chocolate ... lots of malts ... little caramel ... nice but not deep and rich and dark enough. daknole (2805), Plantation, Florida, USA Apr 28, 2009 Black as night with a creamy beige head. Very good. Aroma has good chocoolate, coffee and tons of roast. Flavor is smooth and creamy. Lots of good dark chocolate and strong roasted coffee on the tongue. This is a bit dry, but very flavorful. mixinnixon2000 (227), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 4, 2009 On Tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a nice brown head. flavors of chocolate and coffee. a touch of vanilla. CanIHave4Beers (833), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Jan 10, 2009 Notes from a tasting a couple of months back.
Pours dark almost black.
Aroma of oatmeal and roasted barley. some faint hops very wholesome aroma. Falvor of coffee & oats with some slight fruity notes. there is a little cardboard too. This is generally too light bodied and a little too smooth.
