Beardface (772), Eugene, Oregon, USA Jun 27, 2009 12 oz bottle. Fantastic name! Pours out chestnut brown with minimal head. Aroma was caramel and toffee with a bit of earthy hops. Flavor was very malty, caramel, toffee and some earthy hop notes for a little balance. Not terrible, but not great either. highibus (360), Mill Creek, Washington, USA Jun 25, 2009 Pours a ruby/chestnut with no real head to speak of. Only a light aroma of sweet malt and dark fruit. Medium body with plenty of sweetness as it should be. Not bad. smcolw (177), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA Jun 21, 2009 Nearly no head. Orange-amber color. No lace. Small amount of haze.
The aroma is sweeter than I expected, but there is a faint hop smell that was also unexpected. If blindfolded, I might think light brown ale or pale ale.
Stronger malt than hop, but this could be described as a hoppy Scotch Ale. Good body, with a solid level of carbonation. Very short aftertaste. Not very complex.
vacantskies (43), Spokane, Washington, USA Jun 18, 2009 The color is rich mahogany. It has very light foam. The citrus aroma is surprising. The flavor is refreshing and delicious. scrizzz (986), kirkland, Washington, USA Jun 18, 2009 Light copper, thick sticky head. Little caramel nose and a little nectar. Wow. Wow. I remembered this as a gentle introduction to peaty scotch ales, but POW there’s a decent smoky body that persists through the sip. Smoky character doesn’t start until the swallow so it goes from milk thistle, to smoke, to caramel and more smoke creeps in. I’m buying more of this in the future. stchloe (406), Portland, Oregon, USA Jun 8, 2009 Very big caramel malt body. Slight estery-ness combined with a nice smokey peat nose. Very good beer, a nice style of scotch ale. DigitalMan (82), Idaho, USA Jun 6, 2009 Feel was sort of watery, but flavor was stronger and fuller. Malty with a bit of hops. Nothing special. KnN (618), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Jun 1, 2009 On Tap at the Pike Brewery. Poured a really nice dark orange color with a thin off white head. Aroma was big caramel toffee and malt. Flavor was sweet, but had a nice balancing hop bitterness. Well balanced. Really nice scotch ale.
