IrishBoy (2686), Bakersfield, California, USA Jul 12, 2008 #200 rating for the beer! 12 oz bottle from enniskillen; Nose of prunes, cherries, and brown sugar sweetness; clear brown with a medium beige head; flavor is lightly fruity, peppery, with light hop bitterness; finish has a smoky note and a little alcohol warmth. carruthm (1112), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 22, 2008 A great example of a scotch ale. Dark brown with strong malt flavors and a smoky character HoppyGuy (111), USA Jun 17, 2008 Bottle. Pours a medium brown with a tan head. Aroma is malty and toasty. Flavor is rich and malty, with a wonderful smoky presence. Good Scotch ale. I’d like to pair this with a hearty soup, maybe split pea with ham hock. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jun 5, 2008 The Dan Journal #184. 12oz bottle. Tasted 6/3/08. Hazy yet relatively clear. Ruby hue. Sparse webbed off-white head. Hoeny and sugary aromas. Touch candy cherries. Great nose. Medium to full bodied with an off smokey tart flavor. Char. Sticky coffee acidity. Solid scotch ale, but too much smoke. Bitter hop finish, but once again, the smokey character dominates and in my opinion, detracts. Dissapointed. phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA May 20, 2008 Pours a dark brown colour with a full, thick sweet head. Very nutty hint of oak- Definately some smokey character, midpalate its very malty and smooth. Lighter then what im used to for a scotch, but tastey and creamy all the way through on the palate. Dogbrick (2816), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 16, 2008 Sample at the brewpub. Pours a clear deep amber color with a medium thin and creamy beige head that recedes slowly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt, hops and caramel. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, caramel, and hops. Light smoke in the background as well. The finish is rich and sweet with a lingering caramel malt aftertaste. Above average all around.
