nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Aug 1, 2007 Updated: Oct 22, 2008Bottle. Clear copper-orange with a small, sorta lasting head. Earthy, metallic spicy molasses nose, with a hint of citrus. Flavors of spicy, metallic barley and oats cereal sweetened with honey-molasses. Just a touch of smoke and sourness carries the flavors throughout. Mostly smooth palate: medium-bodied, slightly watery and tingly. Excellent balance and fairly tasty, but feels like a bit more body is needed to push this one up. Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 30, 2007 Draught sample. Light soy, smoky malt aroma with just a bit of light fruity hops. Mild aroma, but pleasant. Amber brownish clear with foamy off-white lacing head. Meidum body with medium carbonation. Medium heavy sweetness and brown sugar, toffee. Really nice smoky undertones, followed by a medium smoky bitterness. Neutral fruits and golden raisins. Sweet smoky finish and smoked malt after. Very nice bit of peat. Hooker (450), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Jul 17, 2007 Hazy copper colour with thin biege head. Grapefruit hop nose. Dry bitter hop taste with lingering hop finish troopie (848), USA Jul 11, 2007 Bottle. Brown with bubbly white head. Strong malty aroma. Fruity with strong malt and some peatiness in the finish. I liked this, but probably wouldn’t drink more than one at a time. pantani (1894), Salinas, California, USA Jul 6, 2007 Amber, nice white head. Sweet aroma, with a light hoppiness, some raisin. Taste is caramel, dried fruit, dates, lightly hoppy background. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Jun 19, 2007 Bottle. Extremely malty aroma, faint smoke and peat with light fruitiness. Copper-amber body with a rocky tan head and medium-strong carbonation. Crisp, slightly sharp taste, caramel malt dominant. Peat recession, but the fruitiness remains. Medium body with lingering caramel aftertaste and a faint touch of sourness. Solid and balanced, a good but not great one. Thanks, Jake! bhensonb (4182), Woodland, California, USA Jun 7, 2007 Strong caramel aroma. Maybe hop peaked through; or not. Copper color with a white head that rapidly filmed out, though it left hints of lace. Medium bodied. Pretty foamy. Starts a bit non-descript, but malt definitely shows up as the carbonation leaves. Which thins the body. Not really getting smokiness. Lightly hopped it is. Very. The finish is actually a bit dry, if you wait for the malt to drain away. It leaves a warm sensation in the tummy, but little, if any, bitter in the mouth. Sort of a standard alcohol scotch style, with perhaps standard malt, but it just seems a bit bland (to plagiarize from puzzl).
