Commercial Description:
Unlike the lighter "Scottish" ales, this is an authentic heavy Scotch ale. It is lightly hopped with a strong malt character, and a hint of peaty smokiness. Warm fermentation produces fruity esters and balances the sweet malt character.

The color is rich mahogany. It has very light foam. The citrus aroma is surprising. The flavor is refreshing and delicious.

Light copper, thick sticky head. Little caramel nose and a little nectar. Wow. Wow. I remembered this as a gentle introduction to peaty scotch ales, but POW there’s a decent smoky body that persists through the sip. Smoky character doesn’t start until the swallow so it goes from milk thistle, to smoke, to caramel and more smoke creeps in. I’m buying more of this in the future.

Very big caramel malt body. Slight estery-ness combined with a nice smokey peat nose. Very good beer, a nice style of scotch ale.

Feel was sort of watery, but flavor was stronger and fuller. Malty with a bit of hops. Nothing special.

On Tap at the Pike Brewery. Poured a really nice dark orange color with a thin off white head. Aroma was big caramel toffee and malt. Flavor was sweet, but had a nice balancing hop bitterness. Well balanced. Really nice scotch ale.

Meaty smokey flavor with bitter grapefruit hop finish. Similar hop profile to the pale with some added malt characteristics in here.

Much, much, MUCH better the second time. On tap; poured a red mahogany with an offwhite head and some lace. Aroma was nearly pure butterscotch. The taste was more of the same, with a slight hint of chili and a definite smokiness.
