Commercial Description:
Unlike the lighter "Scottish" ales, this is an authentic heavy Scotch ale. It is lightly hopped with a strong malt character, and a hint of peaty smokiness. Warm fermentation produces fruity esters and balances the sweet malt character.

Meaty smokey flavor with bitter grapefruit hop finish. Similar hop profile to the pale with some added malt characteristics in here.

Oddly sweet aroma, touch of peat as well. Caramel sweet malt, sweet in the finish. Doesn't show any of the 6.6% its advertised to be. Where's the peat thats in the aroma? Nowhere to be found in the flavor.

Thanks to Carter for tihs bottle. Reddish amber color with no head at all. A little sweet malt with earthy notes. Don’t get much hops. Rather flat...maybe oxidized. Caramel and mushrooms on the finish.

From the bottle.

Pours a light orange with an aroma that seems limited when the beer is cold but which develops a pleasing complexity as it warms. The mouth is rich without being heavy, and lively in its carbonation.

The taste is warm malt, with a creme brule sweetness and hints of seaweed, smoke, oak, and cognac. The alcohol, while noticable, adds to the richness. Rather than forsaking the hops, the brewers have balanced the rich malt with enough hops to provide a spicy complement to the other favors to round out the finish with a pleasing bitter note.

Thi s is a first-rate beer, and probably my favorite of Pike’s offerings.

Golden amber hue. Malty nose with a subtle hint of floral hops. Great malts, medium body, faint smoke, lightly stoney, with a very nice hopped up finish. A well balanced, easy-drinking brew, although I wasnt about to lift my kilt.

Bottle. Scotch ale? This has nothing to do with an "authentic heave Scotch ale", but it is drinkable nevertheless. Brown/copper colour, small beige head that disappears quickly. Aroma of oak, smoke, not very sweet. The beer reminds me of a pale ale, dry, malty, with a dry-hopped reminescense of some industrial cleanser [after reading other reviews, it’s actually more like vinegar]. Drinkable, but not too balanced.

A great example of a scotch ale. Dark brown with strong malt flavors and a smoky character

at pikes brewery, seattle. probably one of the better pikes i had that day. orange brown pour with a tan plump head. slim nose of of white sweets vanilla and toffee. rock candy with predominant malt back bone. slight bittering hops evident at the backend. not as big as i had hoped.
