Commercial Description:
Unlike the lighter "Scottish" ales, this is an authentic heavy Scotch ale. It is lightly hopped with a strong malt character, and a hint of peaty smokiness. Warm fermentation produces fruity esters and balances the sweet malt character.

at pikes brewery, seattle. probably one of the better pikes i had that day. orange brown pour with a tan plump head. slim nose of of white sweets vanilla and toffee. rock candy with predominant malt back bone. slight bittering hops evident at the backend. not as big as i had hoped.

Deeper copper color with an average head from the bottle. This beer is much better on tap at their brew house in Seattle, but that was a few years back, so I'll rate the bottle. Must be drank at 55-59 to let it open up. A little smokey roasted malt with good balace on the hops. Nice finish, not Pikes best, but an alright brew.

Draught @ City Grill - Pretty mild aroma of yeast and grain, flavour is simply toasted malts and slight hay. The alcohol wasn’t overt for me, rather like I was aware of its presence but didn’t notice it. It might have been because the restaurant was pretty crappy and watering down the beers, but it was still enjoyable. I liked this beer...

old ratings. 6/3/7/4/15 - 3.5 6/3/7/3/13 - 3.2 on-tap at pike pub in seattle. pours a dark amber with a red tint, with little to no head and some lacing. smells of some berry, malt, sweet, caramel, butterscotch, some hops, some nuts. taste oily, flat, has a sweet start then ends bitter, malt, some roasted nuts, some butterscotch, becomes more bitter as it warms.

Pours a light golden amber hue with a small white head. Aromas of straw, a little caramel and a little roasted. Flavors of honey, roasted malts, a slight smokiness, and caramel. Mouthfeel is meduim bodied and goes down smooth. This was a lot better than I had thought, yet is is the "lighter scotch ale" that so badly want this not to be.

12 oz bottle via Liquid Solutions. Pours a hazy amber with a small head. Nose is strong and spicey with notes of pepper, ginger, and alcohol. Tastes like is smells with a somewhat metaalic cardboardy aftertaste. Pretty good and would be real winnder if the aftertaste were better...

I enjoyed the taste of this beer very well..sweet yet smoky, maltiness is replaced by a nice balanced hop bitterness near the end..also can tase some nice dark coffee accents to the mouthful..good stuff..but not great.

Potent and ’herbal’ scotch ale. Uniquely flavored though I don’t care much for it.
