Commercial Description:
Unlike the lighter "Scottish" ales, this is an authentic heavy Scotch ale. It is lightly hopped with a strong malt character, and a hint of peaty smokiness. Warm fermentation produces fruity esters and balances the sweet malt character.

Sweet caramel nose, noticeable smoky notes. Orange with brown hues and frothy head. Smoky and oaky sweetness, with bitterness cutting at the end. Medium carbonation and body great smooth finish. All around nice Scotch Ale with solid complexity.

Pours a ruby/chestnut with no real head to speak of. Only a light aroma of sweet malt and dark fruit. Medium body with plenty of sweetness as it should be. Not bad.

Riesling-ish aroma, biter sugar, slightly cherry. Head gone quickly. Not as “ruby” as advertised. this bottle a little flat. I taste the water more than I taste the malt, thin for a scotch ale. Delicate flavor, appley, peat smoke, dark caramel in the back.

Pours a ruby colour with a small creamy white head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Toffee, cream, and sweet fruit. Watery palate. Sweet and simple. Dried apricots, toffee, and a oaky finish. Peat??? This is pretty pedestrian,.

Reddish amber in color and lacking any head. Strong aroma of sweet malt and alcohol. Watery on the palate almost flat like, with flavors of malt, prunes, and alcohol. The alcohol flavo builds throughout and leaves a mild aftertaste.

Despite the commercial description, this is not a ’heavy Scotch ale.’ It resembles the so-called ’60-Shilling’ ales in weight and countenance. It is a dark gold-amber color with a creamy but light head, slightly hazy to the eye. Its aroma is relatively light but is simultaneously fruity and sort of ’earthy’--quite pleasant. Its flavor builds seamlessly from a moderately smokey-sweet malt foundation to a surprisingly assertive hoppy ’top end.’ It finishes smoothly with residual layers of both malt and hops...very nice indeed.
