I found the aroma to not be as malty as I had expected...but malt was dominant characteristic. Taste is much the same, though I did detect a small amount of hoppiness and something else. I guess it was the peat. Decent and very drinkable, but nothing I would necessarily search out again. jcwattsrugger (5581), Florida and, New Jersey, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 11, 2007 on tap-pours a light tan head and amber color. Aroma is mild medium malt. Taste is smoky/peat, medium malt-caramel, some hops bitterness. Medium body. OK/mild carbonation. Right on for the style as a cross over beer. vulcanmeister (105), La Grande, Oregon, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 12, 2009 Poured from12oz bottle. Medium amber liquid with a short lasting vigorous white head. The aroma was quite different, smoky and biscuity. The flavor was smoky, earthy, tart, a wee bit bitter, which was the major note that lasted. Only 6.5% but seemed stronger for some reason. Mouth feel was light and crisp. A bit of malty sweetness and lingering dried plum in the aftertaste. it grows on you, quite drinkable. A right comfortable scotch ale. illinismitty (1801), Nashville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 20, 2007 Draft at brewpub. This was a strange beer experience, because this transformed as it warmed, and not for the better. So my notes are based on my initial reaction. Pours deep reddish brown with an off white head. Sweet berry and malty aroma. Medium bodied with softer carbonation than the other Pike beers on tap, and slightly thin texture. Dark caramel-like maltiness, that is sweet and countered by some tobacco and subtle smoked peat. Short finish. Delirium (502), Santa Cruz, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Aug 7, 2006 Bottle. Pours clear dark reddish-brown with a minimal head. Aroma is caramel malts, with a bit of smokiness. Flavor is similar, with some light hoppiness. Medium bodied, and with medium carbonation. A respectable middle-of-the-road scotch ale. jake65 (1725), Williston, North Dakota, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | May 5, 2006 Pours a nice color of amber with a few hints of darker brown, average sized head disapears quickly. Taste is malty, also with some fruit, roastiness, and light hops balance things out. Has a thicker feel than I expected. Quite good overall. smcolw (373), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jun 21, 2009 Nearly no head. Orange-amber color. No lace. Small amount of haze.
The aroma is sweeter than I expected, but there is a faint hop smell that was also unexpected. If blindfolded, I might think light brown ale or pale ale.
Stronger malt than hop, but this could be described as a hoppy Scotch Ale. Good body, with a solid level of carbonation. Very short aftertaste. Not very complex.

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jun 5, 2008 The Dan Journal #184. 12oz bottle. Tasted 6/3/08. Hazy yet relatively clear. Ruby hue. Sparse webbed off-white head. Hoeny and sugary aromas. Touch candy cherries. Great nose. Medium to full bodied with an off smokey tart flavor. Char. Sticky coffee acidity. Solid scotch ale, but too much smoke. Bitter hop finish, but once again, the smokey character dominates and in my opinion, detracts. Dissapointed.
