fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Sep 22, 2009 Hazy amber color. It’s a rather simple Barley Wine, actually more as a Strong American Ale; there is surely caramel flavor, but by far not enough body and sweetness and malt; reasonable hopping. Anyway, a good brew. Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark Sep 22, 2009 Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of MaltOMeal. Pours a hazy amber with an off-white head. Aroma of fruit and vitamin C. Medium body, a little low in carbonation, overripe fruit and sweet caramel. Hardly any bitterness. Not the most exciting Barley Wine. 220909 areyouinning (72), North Carolina, USA Sep 9, 2009 Mahogany color, rather cloudy with tan head. Malt presence dominates subdued aroma. Molasses and oak present in flavor. Esters contribute nice, smooth mouthfeel. Taste is stronger in the beginning. (Rating #2587) MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 12, 2009 My Bottom Line:
Resinous and earthy hops flow over peat smoke, caramel and alcohol heat in this brash yet classic American Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the dark amber.
-The malt flavors were relatively simple.
-I would have preferred more cohesion in the flavor profile; as is, it felt like there were a lot of flavors thrown about.
-This might not be aging too well. I’ll have to taste a fresher version to see if that’s what I prefer in this brew.
2-year-old bottle from the 2007 vintage. TURDFERGUSON (1594), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Aug 10, 2009 2007 bomber shared by Ethan. Thanks bro. Been trying to drink this for a while. Nose was fruity, rich, and slightly hoppy. Flavor was rich caramel, still pretty hoppy, a bit of peat. Pretty nice, but I expected less bitterness. Easy to drink with a light mouthfeel and warming finish. emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Aug 8, 2009 Via trade. Pours a nice red orange with a one finger yellow head. Very pretty. Nose is sweet, malty, caramel, peachy, fruity, pungent, English feel, nice citrus rind hop feel. Flavor is sweet and malty, mild oxidation, warming, nice citrus rind bitterness, nice flavor. Very mellow barley wine. Easy to drink. Warming palate with a prominent bitterness. michael-pollack (2603), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 2, 2009 22oz. Bottle (2007): Aroma of hops, pine, sugary malts, slight citrus, slight caramel, light resin, and a hint of alcohol. Poured deep amber/slight brown/copper in color with a small, creamy, tan head that diminished but lasted as a film on top of the beer. Cloudy. Not sparkling. Full of tiny, small, and medium-sized particles throughout. Small lacing. Complex flavor is lightly sweet and medium to heavy bitter. Tastes of hops, resin, pine, slight smoke, malts, toffee, light molasses, slight dark ripe fruit, slight caramel, slight citrus, slight wood, and a hint of alcohol. Medium body. Viscous, then dry texture. Average carbonation. Hops, pine, malts, slight caramel, and hint of alcohol finish is dry. 10%ABV is well hidden though noticeable.
