boboski (1095), USA Dec 20, 2007 2006, consumed at just over 1 year of age. Pours a cloudy orange with a creamy but quickly and mostly dissipating off-white head. Mild peat and orange marmalade top a sturdy grain bill. Yeast is still pretty evident, alcohol of medium stature. Powdered sugar is a dominant trait, interesting but smothering. Vanilla that was only hinted at in the nose is much stronger in the first sip, trailed closely by mild to medium hoppy bitterness and pleasant malt sweetness, all before sugariness returns. Citrus is strong and lightly quenching as well as syrupy and dense. The finish is of orange glazed powdered sugars and lignering bitterness, drying signifigantly and leaving a lingering friut pith taste behind. The mouthfeel is creamy, medium-full bodied and somewhat smooth. This is very drinkable but awfully sugary for a barleywine, or any cold-weather drink. I feel the headache coming on soon.
JCB (1001), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 27, 2008 12oz bottle from Liquid Solutions, 2006 bottling. Deep copper color, comes out of the bottle fairly thin, as if it had several years of age on it already. Despite what’s advertised, there’s a strongly nutty aroma on this one that seems to suggest anything but a PNW hop bomb of a barleywine. Thin body, slightly sugary, with very little character to the brew. Sure, there’s some hops still there (more present in the bite, as there’s nothing you could really describe as floral or citric) and some yeast in there to hold things together too. But there’s not a whole lot to this one, unfortunately. I’m sitting on a second bottle, so will rerate if appropriate. yespr (6259), Copenhagen O, Denmark Aug 6, 2008 22 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy and brown with a lacing tan head. Aroma is solid fruity to hoppy. Smooth hoppy and slight woody dry flavour. Mild spiced to solid dry spiced. Dry and slight caramelish finish yet dry and brett. anders37 (2569), Malmö, Sweden Jul 17, 2008 2006 bottle @ the brewpub. Pours a slightly hazy dark golden color with a small white head. Sweetish malty and very hoppy grapefruit aroma. Sweetish and very malty sugary dark fruit flavor with hoppy hints. Long warming malty dark fruit finish with some hoppy hints. waolsen (956), Littleton, Colorado, USA Jul 13, 2008 2007 bottle. thanks gk. chestnut pour with thin frothy head. lacing and light carbonation. aroma is hoppy with nice fruitiness, big heavy malts, sweet and a bit of sugar. smooth for such a young bw. well balanced with nich plum and raison. light bitterness that lingers after sipping. sweet caramel and toffee. very enjoyable. douglas88 (726), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jun 27, 2008 Bottle shared by footbalm. Pours a cloudy amber with a tiny head. The aroma was sweet apple cider and candies. The taste was very smooth, full of caramel, some dark fruit, a touch of brown sugar, toasted malts, not much of a Scotch presence, but good nevertheless.
