smcolw (177), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA Jul 2, 2009 Lots of lace; good beige head; nearly black color where no light shines through.
Semi-sweet chocolate aroma. Relatively mild smell.
Stronger flavor of unsweetened coffee. Long aftertaste of solid bittering hop. Relatively thin body compared to many stouts.
Savvy1982 (115), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Jun 24, 2009 Updated: Jun 25, 2009Bottle. Pours a very very dark near-black, with a dark tan head, moderate, ropey lacing. Nose is quite hoppy, plenty of pine resin and a bit of skunk. Roast malt, coffee, a bit of sweetness. Hops hide a bit of the delicacy of the stout. Palate is initially very pleasant; hops, roast malt, coffee, some malty sweetness. With time, a slight burnt character as well as a bit of metal show themselves, marring an otherwise quite nice beer. Odd, lighter than expected, and not fantastic, but I would buy it again. Cole (150), , Alberta, Canada Jun 24, 2009 Pours black, thick beige head, good retention. Aroma is very nice, cascade hops, dark roasted malts and coffee.Flavor is deep and rich, coffee, roasted malt, some chocolate mid palate, and a very hopy bitter finish. Very dry. slightly alcoholic and a bit burnt tasting. TheEnemy (398), Chicago, USA Jun 24, 2009 12oz bottle.
Pours a dark and gloomy brown-black with wisps of creamy tan head. Aroma is straight from the School of How A Stout Should Smell -- rich, roasty, chocolaty, caramel-y, topped of with vinous alcohol. Flavor is, not surprisingly, rich, roasty, chocolaty, caramel-y, topped of with vinous alcohol, only the dry toasty grain plays an appropriately larger role than in the aroma. Palate is disappointingly thin for a beer that smells and tastes this big. Still, I wouldn’t turn one of these down just for its weak mouthfeel. A fine brew. scrizzz (986), kirkland, Washington, USA Jun 23, 2009 Strong roasted malt aroma, very dark brown, creamy small tan head, lacing all down the glass. Nice 1.5 stout. Heavier than yr typical stout, smaller than an imperial. Just beefy with a scowl. Intense roast, dry grain, kick ass. Butters (1278), Not-so-Temporarily in Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jun 17, 2009 Bottle shared with the guys courtesy of ScottyP from his trip to Austin. Near black pour with decent, fading dark tan head. Roasty, smokey, chocolate. Some coffee in the finish. A little thin on the palate. Cool label. Cirrhosis (550), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 16, 2009 Black body with zero light penetration, thick brown cap floats on top that has the consistency of melted marshmallow. Burnt malty aroma, some bitter chocolate, a mild sourness, and a hidden aroma that I’ll call brand new rubber boot. Burnt malt flavour with massive bitterness. Piney hops dominate thank gawd this isn’t citrusy hops. Dust and backers chocolate linger in the after taste. Not bad I guess nothing over the top or memorable though. zach8270 (1822), Henrietta, New York, USA Jun 11, 2009 (bottle - 22 oz) Dark black pour with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is rich and roasty with some hints of chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee. Flavor is rich and roasty at the start with a nice coffee and chocolate balance. Finishes with a nice light bitterness from the roasted malts. Just thick enough to make it very drinkable and with the right amount of bitterness. Excellent.
