ditmier (1021), Boise, Idaho, USA Jul 23, 2009 2009 Bottle - Pours almost black with a medium light tan head...aroma is oily and dark, dry malt, charred wood and some faint cocoa...flavour is oddly acidic, toast, burnt coffee bitterness, lightly astringent, creme...why is this sour? puboflyons (589), New Hampshire, USA Jul 19, 2009 From the 650 ml bottle with no obvious lot code or expiration date. Everything about this suggests it is something solid and firm. It pours from the heavy weight bottle an opaque brown with creamy brown head and decent lacing. The aroma is alive with smoky chocolate malt with the strength of an Imperial Stout. The mouthfeel is creamy and bold. The taste tingles with coffee, chocolate and hops and settles fine on the palate. This was a topnotch stout. thornecb (1736), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Jul 14, 2009 Pours mahogany-tinged black into an English pint. Mocha micro head with excellent retention recedes leaving slight spiders. Cocoa and smoke aromas. Thin to medium bodied with upfront dark chocolate turning to a lasting charred chocolate syrup and espresso finish. Barrios (852), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jul 14, 2009 Pours a khaki head with legs and a dark brown body. Smells of smoke, roast, and caramel. Flavor is the same. Little thin. Finish is a little sour, some bitterness, and smoke. DJMonarch (6036), Northwich, Cheshire, England Jul 11, 2009 From the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center 13/10/2007
Fruit and hop aromas. Black strong in alcohol and fruity with a crisp and bitter roast finish. smcolw (314), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA Jul 2, 2009 Lots of lace; good beige head; nearly black color where no light shines through.
Semi-sweet chocolate aroma. Relatively mild smell.
Stronger flavor of unsweetened coffee. Long aftertaste of solid bittering hop. Relatively thin body compared to many stouts.
Savvy1982 (303), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Jun 24, 2009 Updated: Jun 25, 2009Bottle. Pours a very very dark near-black, with a dark tan head, moderate, ropey lacing. Nose is quite hoppy, plenty of pine resin and a bit of skunk. Roast malt, coffee, a bit of sweetness. Hops hide a bit of the delicacy of the stout. Palate is initially very pleasant; hops, roast malt, coffee, some malty sweetness. With time, a slight burnt character as well as a bit of metal show themselves, marring an otherwise quite nice beer. Odd, lighter than expected, and not fantastic, but I would buy it again. Cole (266), , Alberta, Canada Jun 24, 2009 Pours black, thick beige head, good retention. Aroma is very nice, cascade hops, dark roasted malts and coffee.Flavor is deep and rich, coffee, roasted malt, some chocolate mid palate, and a very hopy bitter finish. Very dry. slightly alcoholic and a bit burnt tasting.
