scrizzz (1248), kirkland, Washington, USA Jun 23, 2009 Strong roasted malt aroma, very dark brown, creamy small tan head, lacing all down the glass. Nice 1.5 stout. Heavier than yr typical stout, smaller than an imperial. Just beefy with a scowl. Intense roast, dry grain, kick ass. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Jun 17, 2009 Bottle shared with the guys courtesy of ScottyP from his trip to Austin. Near black pour with decent, fading dark tan head. Roasty, smokey, chocolate. Some coffee in the finish. A little thin on the palate. Cool label. Cirrhosis (607), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 16, 2009 Black body with zero light penetration, thick brown cap floats on top that has the consistency of melted marshmallow. Burnt malty aroma, some bitter chocolate, a mild sourness, and a hidden aroma that I’ll call brand new rubber boot. Burnt malt flavour with massive bitterness. Piney hops dominate thank gawd this isn’t citrusy hops. Dust and backers chocolate linger in the after taste. Not bad I guess nothing over the top or memorable though. zach8270 (2051), Henrietta, New York, USA Jun 11, 2009 (bottle - 22 oz) Dark black pour with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is rich and roasty with some hints of chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee. Flavor is rich and roasty at the start with a nice coffee and chocolate balance. Finishes with a nice light bitterness from the roasted malts. Just thick enough to make it very drinkable and with the right amount of bitterness. Excellent. snakeoilpete (324), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 5, 2009 Cask at Elysian’s SBW Firkin-Firkin throwdown (vs. Stone "Oaked" IRS). Pours dark brown with minimal head. Roasty malts, chocolate, and oatmeal in the smell and taste. Decent smooth mouthfeel, but not much of a finish. This should have been way overmatched against that Stone, but there seemed to be something a little weird in that cask, so it was close. With conflicting labels at Elysian and no sign of a (non-bourbon) oaked IRS on here, I’m not even sure what that Stone offering was. decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Jun 3, 2009 A pitch black pour with creamy tan head and lace. Large roasted malt aroma with light chocolate and coffee. An almost licorish hint with a medium malt bitter and a bit of nice warmth. Medium/full bodied with very nice carbonation. KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Jun 1, 2009 On tap at The Pike Brewery in Seattle. Poured a nice dark black stouyt color with a thin off white head. Aroma was chocolate malt, coffee, dark chocolate. Flavor was chocolate and coffee, but not overly bitter or full of tannins. This was a great stout. ScottyP (314), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA May 25, 2009 Pours a thick black with tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, some smoke, chocolate and hops. Very smoky taste, with coffee, malt, some cocoa. Nice mild hop finish. Solid stout!
