jthg (66), Austin, Texas, USA Mar 17, 2009 I was not impressed by this beer. The beer didn’t taste done - the malt completely over powered this beer and left the mouth with a malt bitterness in the mouth.
I feel bad rating this beer low seeing how everyone else rated it higher. Maybe I got a bad bottle? danielcurtis81 (879), San Diego, California, USA Feb 27, 2009 Bottle. Pours a nice coffee black with a roasted tan head. Nose is dark roasted coffee, nice. Flavors are full of that dark roasted coffee as well. Really nice hints of chocolate too. Smoky flavors become more predominate a little latter in the bottle. Gets to me a little too much smoke come the end. The beginning is awesome and the smokiness is well done but just gets old. Still a good stout! RollinHard (748), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Feb 24, 2009 Pours black with a small brown head that doesn’t last at all. Aroma disappoints me with only a slight bit of dark chocolate and anise, with more emphasis on herbal pine, burnt coffee, bitter tea, and just really burnt and astringent overall. Similar taste overall, but with a bit more fudge, but otherwise....and the ashy finish seems off. Medium bodied, mild creamy texture. I like it’s half-imperial stout approach, but the flaws bother me too much. hobbersr (393), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Feb 21, 2009 Pours as dark as night with a milk chocolate coloured head. Aroma is of citrus, mainly grapefruit and lemon, pine, chocolate, ash, smoke. Taste very citrusy, lemon, grapefruit, ash, smoke, coffee, dark chocolate, and tar. Nice mouth feel.
ABV-7% IBU - 65 DuffMan (2719), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada Feb 14, 2009 Pours a near-black with a thick brown head. Good lacing. Very roasty aroma and flavour, charred and a little earthy. Bitter chocolate and a hint of fruit (yeast?). Smooth and full-bodied, with medium sweetness. Finish is quite dry. This plays more like a foreign stout in my mind, but who cares... it’s awesome! Rune (2744), Tromsø, Norway Jan 31, 2009 650ml bottle airborne from Seattle - big thanks to Stefan and Elisabeth for providing this great stout for a beer session in Tromsø. Pitch black body under a brownish, lacing-head. Smell of roasted coffee beans overlaid by moderately sweet malts. Powerful and well balanced taste of dark chocolate, anise, burnt coffee and hops – all added a vanilla touch. Bittersweet ending. Medium to full bodied. IBU 65 [Tromsø, 29.01.2009]. MrBendo (1039), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Jan 22, 2009 Thanks to lb4ln for sending me a bomber. (and Old Mr Crow who sent me a bomber in the past that I drank without rating) Pours dark brown with a medium head. Aroma is roasted dark malt and coffee. Taste is dry with a big, roasty flavor and good natural coffee flavor in the malt. A very fine sessionable stout that I wish I could buy closer to me.
