There is a rich malt flavor that is heavy on coffee and chocolate. This is not a sweet beer but is, rather, very dry with a bitter chocolate finish. A nice brew that is quite unique among stouts. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 15, 2008 Black with a tan head. Medium strong smell of blackned malts and roasted nuts. Full bodied and very smooth. Rich, strong black malt and coffee flavor here is chalky dry without much sweetness. Has a lingering burnt malt bitterness to finish. 21107 mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 3, 2008 Pours jet oily black, with a small, swirly light brown head. Very syrupy sweet nose, alot of caramel, chocolate, licorice, light coffee, and dark malt are all abundant and sharp. The flavor is bigger on the roast then I got in the nose, tons of bitter dark chocolate, caramel malt, and subtle hops in the finish. Really enjoyed the balance and its full flavoredbody. Pretty kick ass stout. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA

Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate with some raisin. Flavors are similar, though the roast comes out a bit more. Nice smooth stout. oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA

Poured an opaque black with a small tan hea. Nice aroma of dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, a bit of hops, and dark cherries. Medium body and thin texture. The flavor was of a robust mocha cafe. It was good but not as good as expected. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 8, 2005 Bottle. Pitch black color. Meager brown head forms and then fades rather quickly to a slight ring. Aroma of kalamata olives and dirty ashtray initially. As the beer warms it takes a more pleasant aroma of moderate smoke and wood. Medium bodied and quite smooth as Oakes notes. Lower carbonation level which is befitting. Pleasant roasted grain flavors. Not overly astringent, decent hop levels. Chocolate and dark coffee. Quite nice. illinismitty (1797), Nashville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 7, 2007 Bottle shared with Your Dark Lord and Landseer. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma was uncharacteristic of a stout, as it smelled like a belgian ale and pot pourri, with just some faint dark roast. Full bodied, but with a medium texture- not as thick as I was expecting. Flavor of dark roast and coffee, but with very little sweetness. Hoppy and earthy finish. Perhaps this one may have been past it’s prime?
