Commercial Description:
A full-bodied beer with deep chocolate color, velvety malt texture, and a dark-roasted flavor, with hints of smokiness and coffee. It combines the dryness of traditional Dublin-style stout with the strength and character of Imperial Stout.

It was the Great Mastertrader Sham that supplied me with this stout! My buddy Sham must really enjoy Mastertrading, I think he Mastertrads whenever his women goes out of town. He’s also a damn nice guy, Thanks for the beer Sham!

Release: 2003-2004
Pours as black as the night in the jungles of Borneo with a fluffy toffee colored head of foam. The nose introduces notes of toffee, raisins, mocha, and cappuccino. The flavor is VERY toasty! Highly kilned chocolate malts, oily French Pressed coffee to no end, a bitter / sweet shock to the palate on the first sip! Rather smoky and chocolaty…. Large suggestions of oak and even some bourbon like submissions. Probably the most black coffee resemblance I have ever had packed into a beer, and I like it!
The palate is phenomenal, Creamy as chocolate moose… and that’s GOOD Stuff!

Draft at Pike in Seattle on 7/11/07. This beer represents #600 for me, and is in thanks to the owner of Pike Pub and Brewery, Charles Finkel, who spent quite a while discussing beer with me, and taking me on a personal tour of the facility. See my Places rating for more on this. An essentially opaque brown/black pour with a substantial brown head introduces this well known offering. Beautiful sticky lace clings to the glass indefinitely. The chocolate and coffee aroma is accented by some woody or roasted notes. This is so smooth and creamy that the heavy body isn’t easily noticed. Beautiful flavor balance of rich dark malty sweetness and some bitterness from the roasted malts and understated hops. This is really a good beer.

Good roasted aroma with nice deep color in the glass. Starts off great, but leaves a little harsh hoppy flavor at the end.

2009 Bottle - Pours almost black with a medium light tan head...aroma is oily and dark, dry malt, charred wood and some faint cocoa...flavour is oddly acidic, toast, burnt coffee bitterness, lightly astringent, creme...why is this sour?

22 oz bottle via Liquid Solutions. Pours a midnight black with an average size tan head. Nose is espresso and licorice. Taste is the same with some burnt malts. Very roasty aftertaste.Medium body, easy to drink. A very good solid stout.

Reviewing the 2004-2005 release. Very attractive beer in appearance, pitch black with a nice sized tan head..that fades fast, but theres always a thick lace on top. Very nice roasty/chocolaty aroma. fresh. Taste is quite sweet to start, then the roasty/dark coffee aspects come in to play, smooth finish, then some bitter after taste.I get some rather faint smokey hints in this beer. good mouthfeel, quite smooth and delightful. A good stout ,very drinkable and not too heavy.
