motelpogo (4111), Plzen, Czech Republic Jan 15, 2004 really interesting stuff. full, furry yeast. there's a scottish ale sort of rich malt which starts to taste of stewed pears as it warms. full in the mouth. one of the highlights of my trip to new zealand (all of which were beer-related) eczematic (1153), Sydney, Australia Jan 6, 2004 a dubbel? an english strong? i dunno. huge rich round malt + heaps of fruit - apple and pear - and plenty of rum and chocolate. nice bitterness. like coopers vintage but better. dreamboat (186), Brisbane, Australia May 4, 2004 Distinctly "Belgian" aroma - just that hint of mustiness. Nice deep brown colour with moderate carbonation, but didn’t really hold a head. Nice big hoppy flavour. Sammy (3041), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 21, 2005 mahogony colour. Hoppy and lots of licorish and coffee and significant chocolate malt flavour. Very smooth. Recommended if you can get it. What a great brewery. Was terrific after fish. Thanks DouglasD for bringing back. yalnikim (647), Wellington, New Zealand Jan 26, 2006 Tasted 21/01/2005. 330ml bottle-conditioned ale from Regional Wines and Spirits, Wellington.
Red-gold with an off-white, lasting, slightly rockey head. Very lacey. Looks delicious. Fresh tropical fruit and cut grass dominate the aroma but as it warms I’m picking up caramel and a spiciness. Big and bitter hops in the mouth, grass, pine, peppery and slightly winey, as it warms, with a dry, toffee-ish, malt profile underneath (no astringency though). Long lasting bitterness. Medium body. Just a touch over-carbonated, for me. Great drinking - up there with Old 95 and Monk’s Habit as one on NZ’s premier strong ales.
