Poured from bottle into a pilsner glass with a cloudy, obviously unfiltered, flaxen colour. The odour of freshly bailed hay, cut grass, and earth are instantly perceptible from this exceptionally well brewed lager. An often overlooked parameter, the water used here is so clean and smooth that it truly places the delicate malt and subtle hop aromas at the fore. From first sip to the last this beer is simply one of the best of the style.

(500 ml bottle: $2.99 at Whole Foods in San Diego/Hillcrest, CA) Lightly bready maltiness and a somewhat grassy hoppiness are the core flavors in this pleasant organic German pils. It’s only lightly sweet and bitterness is fairly restrained as well. The nose is more grainy and less bready to me, but the grassiness is still there. Light-medium bodied with good carbonation, but it doesn’t exhibit much crispness. Pale golden in color and slightly hazy, the beer is capped by a small and rocky off-white head that eventually fades to a ring. A decent organic beer, but not enough to make we want to buy it again.

(500ml bottle) Big white head atop a cloudy lemon yellow body. Aroma is medium sweet, bread/grain, light apple, caramel. Taste is medium sweet, cereal, pear, some herbal/grassy, light lemon. Watery light body with low carbonation, some crispness -- easy to down in a hurry.

Bottle (5%). Slight hop aroma, flowery and malty. Clear golden colour. Small unstable white head. The flavour is nicely flowery, a little sweet for a pils. Reminds me more of a flowery ale than a pils. Bitterness is slightly below average.

(on bottle) Strong strawberry and malt aroma, nice surprice for a beer this type. Hazy yellow, with a lasting white head. The superb carbonation makes the flavours of the malts, hay and some forrest berries come out really nice. A great zing of abricot /rashberries in the finish.

Aroma is light yeast with a hint of grass and wheat. Color is hazy pale yellow with a billowing white head. Flavor is lightly sweet and malty with a little grain, a hint of lemon and a light hop bitter finish. Smooth, creamy, thin palate. Nice Pils.

(bottle) Clear yellow colour with a foamy white medium head. Sweet malty aroma with floral hops and honey. Very crisp, malty mouthfeel, slightly grainy malty taste with a citrus fruity palate and a dry and aromatic hopbitter finish. A good and well-made Pilsener.

Sampled from bottle. Pinkus Ur-Pils pours a faintly hazy, yellow-gold with a generous, frothy white head. Remnants of lacing were left in thick sheets along the glass. Its aroma has an odd apple/wet hay character to it. It was far from unpleasant, but odd nonetheless. Nicely bitter flavor with a strong Euro malt backbone and grassy hops. Medium-bodied and lightly carbonated.
