Commercial Description:
This Belgian Noël takes it’s name from Jan Baptista van Helmont (1579-1644), the Flemish chemist and physician who first discovered CO and coined the word “gas” by recognizing the existence of gases distinct from air. This energy luminary was the founder of pneumatic chemistry and also the first to bridge alchemy and early chemistry. Hats off to the man behind the bubble. Proost and Happy Holidays!

Thanks to Ethan for this! I’ve probably had it for at least a year. Hazy copper pour with a long lived off white head. Orange peel and candy sugar on the nose. Clove, fruits, alcohol and candy sugar. Very Solid beer

Draft at Bruisin’ Ales. Nothing hits the spot while browsing for great beers in an awesome bottle shop like a cool local beer! Strong, boozy Belgian aromas for sure...raisins, alcohol, pepper, some dark fruit. Warms the mouth and has a nice fizzy carbonation. Strong, complex flavors include plums, spices, and Belgian yeasts. It’s not perfectly balanced, but is still tasty and unique. Not the easiest beer to drink a lot of, but that’s not the idea.

750ml corked & caged bottle courtesy of OldGrowth and shared with DrMatt. pours an ever so slightly hazy peach/gold with a short-lived white head. aroma was a combination of spicy sweetness with some yeast. flavor was very sweet with the candi sugar, some candied pears, spice and yeast. a moderate amount of heat on the back of the throat from the alcohol, but considering this one comes in at 11.5%, the alcohol was decently covered. interesting brew. thanks for the bottle Tom!

Pours a murky gold in color with a huge pillowy white head. Smell is coriander, spice and some citrusy fruit. Taste is more of the spice and citrus, but you also get a very nice dose of belgian candy sugar and even better than that, some tartness. This was a very pleasant surprise. Mouthfeel is full and creamy. Surprisingly, didn’t notice the alcohol too much at all. I’ve only had a couple beers from Pisgah, but this one’s easily my favorite.

2007 bottle courtesy of kp. Thanks! From my review at cvillebeergeek.blogspot.com.

Appearance: This pours a hazy orange color. A moderate sized head disappears quickly, leaving a thin layer on the surface of the beer. Lacing is moderate. 4.0/5.0.

Aroma: Definitely Belgian. Very sweet, with candi sugar, toffee, raisin and subtle spice and bubblegum. Slightly toasty.... as I agitate the beer somewhat the aromas combine absolutely beautifully. 4.65/5.0.

Taste: Somewhat more bitter than the aroma. Still plenty of nice malty notes. The toffee, raisins and the candi sugar are there, along with the spice and some fruity notes, rye and alcohol. 4.25/5.0.

Mouthfeel: Full. Spicy and slightly sticky. The alcohol is a little hot, but it is 11.5% and so a little heat is understandable. 3.5/5.0

Drinkability: It’s a 750 mL bottle at 11.5% abv. You be the judge. It’s a damn tasty beer, with lots of complex flavors and very nice balance. Perfect for a long evening by the Christmas fire. 3.75/5.0

Overall: Well balanced and very nice flavor profiles are the hallmark of this beer. Not something to take lightly and definitely something to savor over a long period of time. 4.0/5.0.

Courtesy of Degarth. Pours mildly hazy gold with thin white head. The aroma is big bold sweetness, candi sugar, mildly roasty malts, some apricot like fruitiness and a growing hotness with a deeper draw. The taste is slick and sweet to start with nice lightly roasted malts. This is good and yummy. I love how the malts show up amongst the sweet Belgian candi sugar and mild blended smoothed out spice notes.

Bottle courtesy of Retorp. Pours a slightly hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma of yeast, alcohol, and sweet malt. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and slightly hot alcohol. Good.

(BCTC, 750ml bottle, thanks kramer) Off-white head atop hazy amber body. Aroma is medium sweet, herb/herbal, some alcohol astringency. Taste is moderately sweet, herbal/spicy, some honey. Medium body.
