This is the fifth growler Degarth opened out of seven he brought back from his trip. Thanks buddy. Pours deep brown with amber edges and thin tan head. Nice full aroma well above average for the style with burnt malts and molasses mixed with earthiness. I also get some licorice and mild malt roastiness. The flavor is like the aroma with tasty bold notes of burnt malts, roasty malts and molasses. Nice distinct flavors that don’t really come together but the flavor experience is actually enhanced with this distinctiveness. Nice sessionable brew that ends a bit thin. Leaves toasty-roasty-burnt notes into the after taste.

Growler courtesy of Butters on 12/09/2008. Clear dark brown body with a small creamy light brown head. Big roast and chocolate aroma with some toasty notes. More roast malt flavor, some chocolate, light coffee and a bit more toast with a dry bitter finish. Medium body with moderately low carbonation.

Appearance: Pours chestnut brown body with a thin, fizzy beige head. Smell: Subtle aroma of earthy bittersweet chocolate with a hint of nuts. Taste: Light bittersweet chocolate taste rounded out by a soft roastiness. Just a touch of hops in the dry finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A simple, though decent porter. I had this on-tap at Barley’s in Asheville and later the Brewgrass Beer Festival.
