DrBayern (880), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Apr 23, 2008 Draft at the brewery on 4/17/2008. Opaque, brown/black pour with a sturdy, large beige head and good lace. Burnt sugar and roasted nuts aroma. Medium body and carbonation, ever so slightly astringent, dry palate. Dark malts come through as a molasses type sweetness initially, but the bitterness from the roasted malts soon takes over. Very drinkable, although not overly assertive by any means.
gottalottaibu (225), charlotte, North Carolina, USA Jul 2, 2008 draft at the brewery. dark brown pour. medium bubbly carmel head. nice roasted malt aroma. deep carmel malt taste, nice roastedness and nutty. hint of sweetness. thin mouthfeel with a slight roasted bitter finish. nice and dinkable. Riccardi50 (13), Montreat, North Carolina, USA May 4, 2008 Very nice color and the flavors just explode in your mouth. Its a must on tap. The bottle doesn’t do it justice. Quake1028 (625), Tampa, Florida, USA Feb 18, 2008 Growler courtesy of the man, the myth, the legend, Degarth. Well, the man part is true, I guess. Pours out a very dark brown or black body, completely opaque. One finger thick tan head. Decent retention. Nose of roasted beans and malts, coffee grounds, bittersweet chocolate and some lactic bitterness. Flavor profile is very similar, heavy on the roasted/charred notes, with a sweet backing from the chocolate and lactic notes. Slightly thin, even for a porter, but doesn’t detract too much. Finish is medium length, bitter folding into sweet, and then roasty notes that carry through. Great porter. Ibrew2or3 (1596), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Feb 14, 2008 This is the fifth growler Degarth opened out of seven he brought back from his trip. Thanks buddy. Pours deep brown with amber edges and thin tan head. Nice full aroma well above average for the style with burnt malts and molasses mixed with earthiness. I also get some licorice and mild malt roastiness. The flavor is like the aroma with tasty bold notes of burnt malts, roasty malts and molasses. Nice distinct flavors that don’t really come together but the flavor experience is actually enhanced with this distinctiveness. Nice sessionable brew that ends a bit thin. Leaves toasty-roasty-burnt notes into the after taste.
