MarkBarnes (242), Waterville, New York, USA Jul 31, 2006 7/31/06, 12 oz. bottle -- candyish-malt flavor, if a little thin/watery. Nice lasting head and glass lacing. Sweet aroma. Not top-shelf, but I’d definitely have this again.
Beerman6686 (874), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 21, 2008 Poured a dark brown color with an off white head. Aroma was roasted but bland. Flavor was also dark roasted malts with a strange vineous taste. cheapdark (1683), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 3, 2007 Updated: Dec 31, 2007This bottle is older, from the original Pgh Brewing. Quite surprizing 12 oz brown bottle with a twist off cap. Unfiltered, causes a swirling effect when you pour because of the gunk on the bottom of the bottle. I never would have thunk that Pgh Brewing would have made an unfiltered beer. Very dark, stoutish appearance. Roasty aroma, attractive olfactory. Initial taste is that of a slight vinegar and porter. A positive impression considering the original augustiner did not really turmn my head. Roasty, mild burned wood flavors. Decent carbonation. Finish lacks any bitter or alky linger. Very good example of a dark friendly beer. Should have tried this sooner. I hope the new owners will keep the recipe the same. Would buy again, nice bargain considering the price. dpjuart (642), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 13, 2007 Bottle. Dark brown to black with cream head, quickly disapating. Sweet malt nose. Watery malt taste with hints of roast and licorice, a bit of chocolate. Crisp at the end, but not overly hoppy. Not bad. Average, but drinkable. MrBunn (1004), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 4, 2007 Bottle. Dark brown body with a fizzy head... almost looks like a viscous cola of sorts. Aromas are dark and sweet, but not very complex. I can pick up a light bit of chocolate, toffee and maybe some dark fruit and brown sugar... Flavor tips more towards the fruit side of this spectrum. Prunes are definitely there, and they hover over top of a chocolaty malt roast. It still lacks the complexity of a great beer, but is by far the best thing that Pittsburgh Brewing Company has going that I have seen. Precept53 (113), West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA Feb 21, 2007 Not bad, sampled in Chicago, have not seen it avaible in Detroit yet... Nice malty aroma, with clean finish, tastes like a water laced New Castle...
