nightrider (370), encinitas, California, USA Feb 23, 2008 Poured from the tap at PP C-Bad. Dark amber hue with a mod off white head. good on the palate and then nice caramel malt with a bit of spice. Good up front amount of brash hops with linger after the sip is gone. Good strong ale somewhat reminiscent of Stone AB. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Nov 1, 2007 Updated: Mar 25, 2009On tap @ PnP Carlsbad. Pours brownish amber with lasting tan head. The aroma is a big pulse of sweet roasted malts, sweet sugary malts, maybe some biscuit or meladonin malts too. Simply a malt bomb in the nose. This viscous mouth feel ushers in yummy sweet roasty to somewhat biscuit maltiness and nuttiness. The high power malts are quickly met by nearly equal intensity grapefruit hop bitterness. I love these big flavor beers. Ahhhh, big flavor, big yumminess. brianjames1 (322), Northridge, California, USA Oct 15, 2007 On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Dark red color with tan head. Strong ale with strong malty flavor, the alcohol (10%ABV) is hidden extremely well. Excellent brew. kmweaver (2396), Sebastopol, California, USA Oct 1, 2007 Draft @ Pizza Port - Carlsbad. Pours a deep amber color; light tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Dense, earthy malts and brown sugar in the aroma; some dried fruits. Medium-to-full, sticky mouthfeel: tons of earthy malts and dried red fruits; dense, chewy malt character is the main driver here; an imperial red ale with very relaxed astringency; nice pine and citrus hops. Lengthy, dried red fruit and brown sugar in the finish; some sweet chocolate throughout, tempering the bitterness. Schultsc (478), Henderson, Nevada, USA Sep 17, 2007 On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Clear, deep copper-red with a thin, fine, light-tan head. Citrus peel hops followed by resinous, earthy hops over toasted malt grain notes. Sharp, piercingly bitter hops with caramelized orange peel flavors. Some caramel malt nuttiness and grain astringency as well with strong yet well-integrated alcohol flavors. Big, full body with a hugely bitter mouthfeel that really hangs around well into the long, warm alcoholic finish. nahthan (129), Oakland, California, USA Sep 14, 2007 Tap at Toronado. Nice double red beer. Hides the alcohol well. 10%!? tasted like 7-8, maybe. Lots of caramel flavor. Nice pungent/musty hop flavors (nugget? chinook?). 1/2 pint was perfect, any more than that and the sweetness would stick with me too much. The hop flavors come out nicely as it warms up, and the carbonation is driven off. Great beers as always, Pizza Port. Thanks, jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA Sep 9, 2007 Pint over at PP Carlsbad as I was passin through on the I-5. This one’s an ass kicker... thick doses of rich malt, caramel, fruits, and sticky resinous hops. I’m really into this big-hoppy-double-imperial reds . . . wish more breweries were whippin these up. Like J said, closely resembles Tongue Buckler but with more malt depth and, in comparison, a semi-toned down hop blast.....mmmmmm. hapjydeuce (763), Del Mar, California, USA Sep 5, 2007 Updated: Sep 10, 2007On tap at the Port in Carlsbad, damn I love living up the street from this place! Pours a beautiful deep hue of red with brass colored edges and a one finger rocky vanilla cream-colored head. Warming aroma of melted caramel, fresh toasted bread and malt. Each sip starts with a flavor burst of toasty malts and that good ol’ caramel noticed in the aroma, followed by cinnamon and brown sugar notes that are all backed up by a resiny grapefruit hops profile. The malt really complements the beer’s smoothness on the palate, giving it the chewy aspect. I could almost liken this stuff to Ballast Point’s Tongue Buckler. High alcohol content gives it good warmth. If the ABV was a bit more hidden, I would consider it a stellar Imperial Red.
