2008 Strong Ale Fest (Boulder, CO): Finally getting back to some notes ... Red-brown hue. Lively carbonation. Chalky texture. Very toasty, with rich notes of toffee, chocolate, caramel, candy. Sprightly hops and a healthy bitterness rounded things out nicely.

On tap @ PnP Carlsbad. Pours brownish amber with lasting tan head. The aroma is a big pulse of sweet roasted malts, sweet sugary malts, maybe some biscuit or meladonin malts too. Simply a malt bomb in the nose. This viscous mouth feel ushers in yummy sweet roasty to somewhat biscuit maltiness and nuttiness. The high power malts are quickly met by nearly equal intensity grapefruit hop bitterness. I love these big flavor beers. Ahhhh, big flavor, big yumminess.

Pours dark red with a beige head. Aroma is strong hops and some nice toffee/caramel. Flavor is the same. Some nice sweetness balanced with some strong citrus on the finish. A little bit of alcohol too. A big beer with lots going on.

This is quite hoppy as too be expected but with a decent amount of caramel to it as well. Very agressive and very good.

Draft @ Pizza Port - Carlsbad. Pours a deep amber color; light tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Dense, earthy malts and brown sugar in the aroma; some dried fruits. Medium-to-full, sticky mouthfeel: tons of earthy malts and dried red fruits; dense, chewy malt character is the main driver here; an imperial red ale with very relaxed astringency; nice pine and citrus hops. Lengthy, dried red fruit and brown sugar in the finish; some sweet chocolate throughout, tempering the bitterness.

On tap at Hamiltons and Pizza Port Carlsbad. Pours with a deep red body topped by a medium thick to thick, off-white head with lots of lacing. It’s sweet and malty yet bitter and hoppy with an underlying note of fruit and alcohol. full bodied and smooth yet warming.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Color was auburn with a whitish head. Aroma was pretty typical for the style; sweet caramel, fruity with some sugariness. Flavor was righton on for the style and probably better than most. Good hop/malt balance. Decently sweet; caramel, fruit, sugar with some earthy/piney hops.
