dwyerpg (2042), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Apr 3, 2008 This is quite hoppy as too be expected but with a decent amount of caramel to it as well. Very agressive and very good. Ibrew2or3 (1685), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Nov 1, 2007 On tap @ PnP Carlsbad. Pours brownish amber with lasting tan head. The aroma is a big pulse of sweet roasted malts, sweet sugary malts, maybe some biscuit or meladonin malts too. Simply a malt bomb in the nose. This viscous mouth feel ushers in yummy sweet roasty to somewhat biscuit maltiness and nuttiness. The high power malts are quickly met by nearly equal intensity grapefruit hop bitterness. I love these big flavor beers. Ahhhh, big flavor, big yumminess. Schultsc (403), Henderson, Nevada, USA Sep 17, 2007 On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Clear, deep copper-red with a thin, fine, light-tan head. Citrus peel hops followed by resinous, earthy hops over toasted malt grain notes. Sharp, piercingly bitter hops with caramelized orange peel flavors. Some caramel malt nuttiness and grain astringency as well with strong yet well-integrated alcohol flavors. Big, full body with a hugely bitter mouthfeel that really hangs around well into the long, warm alcoholic finish. hophead_hans (572), Bay Area, California, USA Aug 15, 2007 Tap at Toronado. Nice brown color with a medium head. Big aromas of caramel, raisin and malts. Very hoppy flavors initially that are then superseded by malty tones. Caramel and raisins are present as well as some bread flavors. Very complex, hides the alcohol very well. steview (746), Oceanside, California, USA Mar 22, 2008 I was at the Albertsons picking stuff up for the wife when I decided that I would cap my night of online courses with a growler of something at the Pizza Port (Carlsbad). It seemed busy as usual. I asked the bartender for an IPA, but I could only select from one board of listed brews. I asked for the 547 because I remember it was like an IPA to me, and I liked it when I first sampled it a couple months ago. Anyway, this beer basically reminds me of Founders Red Rye and Three Floyds Brian Boru. It is like an IPA to me, but has that Irish or Rye ale thing going on that reminds me of said named beers. Pizza Port calls it a double Red. I call it delicious. It has a creamy, thin yet not watery mouthfeel, accompanied with a bit sweet, dessert like bready backbone that is also a bit spicy, with some orangey, citrusy hops... and that alcohol zing... mmmhmmm. It is great. It has enough for me--at least. And I am quite the fan of this type of brew.
