alexanderj (2212), Chino Hills, California, USA Nov 2, 2009 On tap at PP Carlsbad a few weeks back. Color was a dark brown to black. Aroma of roasted malt, with a lot of citrus. Really nice aroma. In the flavor the "dark" component was largely overshadowed by a very good IPA. Hoppy and citrusy. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Oct 9, 2009 Black pour w/ a huge thick tan head and great lacing. Big sweet citrus hop aroma light floral ntoes some hints of strawberries, not at all what I expected from this pour. Good full nice palate. Outstanding, smooth fruity IPA just delicious. waolsen (1220), Littleton, Colorado, USA Oct 8, 2009 tap at Falling Rock. beautiful black pour with moderate head and great lacing. light fruity floral aroma. nice balance. moderate body. piney, citrus. Great. JohnnyJ (1282), Carlsbad, California, USA Sep 19, 2009 Draft at PP Carlsbad. Dark brown/red pour with nice thick foam head. Roasted malt, caramel, bitter hops, pine, citrus, and grapefruit. It’s a really nice black IPA, one of the better ones. DaSilky1 (1932), San Diego, California, USA Sep 19, 2009 Draft at small bar: Lacey off-white head, dark blackish appearance. Caramelly hop nose. Flavors caramelly and hoppy with notes of toffee. and a slight hint of medicine, and bursts of minty pine. Very drinkable beer and refreshing with a little toffee depth added to the usual west coast ipa flavors Ungstrup (14724), Frederiksberg, Denmark Jun 24, 2009 Draft in Carlsbad. A dark brown beer with a thin tan head. The aroma is very malty and fruity combined with light notes of roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, hops, and alcohol, as well as light notes of roasted malt, leading to a dry, bitter, and roasted finish. hopscotch (5437), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Sep 1, 2008 Draft... RBSG... Almost pitch black with a burnt orange hue when held up to the So Cal sunshine. Nice, creamy, off-white head with terrific retention and thick, creamy lacework that clings tightly to the side of the glass. Hoppy, fruity, roasted aroma. Full-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and tickling carbonation. A lot of bitterness with low residual sweetness, but near-balance is somehow attained. Deeply roasted finish provides moderate bitterness with a pinch of salt. BrotherGrendel (545), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 23, 2008 On draft at O’Brien’s for CBC/WBC.
Appearance is a pitch black hue, thin layer of off-white head dissipates, minimal lacing.
Smell is big grassy and pine hops, subtle roast and caramel malts, alcohol, and sweet candy.
Taste is big hops and alcohol burn initially, opens up to coffee and roast malts, pine resin and caramel linger, finishes bitter and dry with moderate alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, watery smooth texture, amped up carbonation.
Drinkability is moderate and hampered mostly by the alcohol presence which seems larger than the 8%, overall a nice balance of malts and hops, more of a sipping beer.
