on tap at DLD 08. pours black with off white head. nose is hoppy, grapefruit and piney with subtle hints of toasted malts and chocolate. flavors are much of the same, subtle roast and citrus to it. a full mouth feel. clean finish. i wish i could drink more of this.

draft at DLD. Very interesting beer, nose is distinctly of pot and pungent hops. Taste is comparable. Very hoppy with a minimal amount of roastiness. Very nice beer with a very dark look.

Draught; described by Jeff as a double IPA Black beer with orange-brown highlights, covered with a cream-coloured head. Hops, and this time no doubt US ones; fresh and leafy, some cookies. Sharp bitter, near-metallic taste with bitter chocolate flavours; long bitter-harsh aftertaste. Well bodied, but rather harsh on the throat. Not bad! Original interpretation of an IIPA.

Tap @ Solana Beach. Pours jet black with a short-lived fizzy head. Toast, rye, hops, pine, apple, and some smoke. Sharp, crisp hop bite up front with a lot of pepper and grapefruit. The malt gives it a velvet feel and a nice, rich, earthy back. A fair amount of roasted flavor, but its almost more like a toasted rye as opposed to a roasted malt. Kind of a nice tobacco flavor. Just an excellent beer.

On Tap @ O’Brien’s. Poured nearly balck with tan head. Balanced nose with herbal hops and malt sweetness - subtle, chocolate, toast also there. Flavor is a little lighter than I expected - nice though. Added complexity from darker malts and a nicely hopped finish. Quite good and very drinkable - could have a couple more.

Draught at 6th Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours clear tawny with an average, fizzy, light brown head, lasting with good lacing. Aroma is average malt (grain, hay, straw, meal), average hops (flowers, herbs), average yeast (sweat, dough) with notes of grape and apple. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

Tap @ O’brien’s. Pour took a long time, I guess the tap had just been put on. Pours black with a tan ring. Nose is malty and sweet, not really much hops on the nose. Taste is malty and hoppy and sweet, slight bitter, very nice, very tasty.

the body is confusing me because it’s black, which is obviously not normal for any kind of IPA, and certainly makes me wonder how Three Floyds didn’t think of this! regardless, it’s good--a nice, literally dark IIPA (though more subtle than others in the same class) that i never knew i would ever enjoy.
