BBB63 (3676), La Porte, Indiana, USA Apr 27, 2008 Tap at DLD 2008: Boy was I surprised to see this, thanks Nick and the guys at FFF for bringing in this guest beer!
Nearly opaque with a small off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has notes of grapefruit and mango, piney resiny hops, a bit leafy and earthy too, some charred and caramel malt, and a hint of woody smoke. The taste is quite balanced between the malt and hop providing a few different layers of bitterness. The acidity cleans the palate and makes you really for the next taste. Mild roast and smoke towards the mineral tones finish. The mouth feel is aggressive and bright. A very nice beer overall.
bluemeow76 (685), Lewis Center, Ohio, USA Jul 4, 2008 Sample at the pizza port in Carlsbad. Citrus aroma, nice hops, slight pine in the taste. Good all around. Dogbrick (2165), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jul 3, 2008 Sample at the brewpub. This beer is an opaque and pretty burgundy color with a medium thin and creamy light tan head that recedes steadily. Thin sheet of lacing on the glass. Aroma of grassy hops and citrus, as well as a touch of malt. Medium-bodied and hoppy with notes of pine and grapefruit, underscored by an earthy malt flavor. The finish is hoppy and leaves a pine aftertaste. Solid all around. IrishBoy (2043), Bakersfield, California, USA Jun 5, 2008 Draft at Pizza Port Carlsbad; Nose of citrus and floral hops; clear black with a small beige head; flavor is hop bitterness with some piney notes; finish is lightly bitter. luckygirl (1212), Longmont, Colorado, USA Jun 1, 2008 Sampled ’08 BSAF. Beer is murky, very dark mahogany with a huge, rocky/creamy, tan head. Thick cuff of lacing left to cuddle the pint. Pretty.
The aroma is malty with light notes of roasted grain; Hoppy with heavy resin/pine notes, trace of lemon zest; Miscellaneous notes of metal and generic tropical fruit.
The flavor is moderately/heavily sweet, light/moderately bitter with a very long, lightly/moderately bitter, lightly/moderately sweet finish. Slightly warm.
The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is velvety.
Not great, but pleasantly plush. golubj (945), Redwood City, California, USA May 29, 2008 Draft at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Brown / black pour with brown around the edges. Grapefruit hop aroma. Flavor is brown malt, slightly roasted and nutty, with grapefruit and pine hops being the dominant flavor. Decent bitterness. The rest of the beer outside the hops is unimpressive.
