Ungstrup (11075), Frederiksberg, Denmark Jun 1, 2005 [At GABF 2004, I believe this is the beer I had - though it was named Ports Pilsner] A pale yellow beer with a small dense white head. The aroma is slightly hoppy, while the flavor is malty with some sour hops notes. A boring pilsener. SG (456), San Clemente, California, USA Nov 7, 2004 Clear golden/yellow hue. Malty sweet middle with a nice mellow influence of hops in the middle and end. This is a nice little session beer, and very much in line with the czech style of Pilsener. BeerLimey (1875), California, USA Nov 4, 2004 Sampled at San Clemente, but didn’t feel it was worth submitting seperately. Clear pale appearance. Mild creamy, malty aroma. Sweetish, smooth malt flavor with hints of peppery spice. They’d be better served putting Bud on tap if they wanted to cater to the lighties. Gusler (2656), Tucson, Arizona, USA Jun 15, 2004 Draught @ Pizza Port Carlsbad
The beer pours the traditional Pilsner crystal clear gold with a large white head that is semi-creamy in texture, the lace a white sheet to cover the glass. Nose is the prototypical sweet malt that is fresh and clean, start is sweet and malt laden, the top is fair to middling in its feel to the palate. Finish has a nice crisp acidity and the hops apropos to the style, a nice drinking beer that prepared my palate for another day of “Bad Boy Hop Monsters”!
DarkElf (2650), La Jolla, California, USA Jun 8, 2004 (Draft: Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA) Unfortunately, the key word here is "disappointing", and as the first beer I tried at Pizza Port for the afternoon, I really didn't care for this at all; This pilsner has that American pale lager flavor rather than the nice malty, smoky flavor I expect from a good Czech pilsner; But it's definitely a stronger malt and hops presence than with the crap beers out there, though the malt has a slight corn flavor to it; Balanced early, with a mild bitterness in the finish; Palate is pretty light (but heavier than the crap beers) and not especially crisp in the finish; Nose is lightly malty with a mild hoppiness, but nothing special here either; Pale yellow color with an ever-so-slight cloudiness; White head would probably have average retention at best, but the head was maintained by 2 large "rub" marks (from stacking) along the inside of the glass, and that initiates significant carbonation bubbles; Solid lacing in large patches; Removing "Czech" from the beer name might be a good idea; On second thought, modifing the recipe would be a better idea; I hate to go single digits on the overall rating for a Pizza Port beer, but nothing in my notes could justify going higher
