Sledge Jr (2716), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Aug 10, 2006 On draft at Carlsbad Pizza Port. Oragneish brown, like the old Padres colors. little aroma. hoppy taste up front, then good malt flavor, which is slightly roasted. A fine beer; slightly boring compared to the amazing Pizza Port beer holdings. DarkElf (2650), La Jolla, California, USA Apr 30, 2006 (Draft: Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA) Though they call this Port’s English Pale Ale, they also describe this as an ESB on the beer board. English-style hoppy flavor is moderately bitter and tends to push aside the mild pale maltiness this beer uses as a base. Prominent but not overpowering, the hoppiness builds on the palate and becomes the lasting flavor after awhile, at which point, the mild pale malt base almost goes unnoticed. Lightly grainy and gently hoppy nose isn’t very aromatic. Clean on the palate, some crispness in the finish, lingering bitterness, moderate carbonation. Not as smooth and easy to drink as I normally associate with English brews. Light amber in color with a slight haze, the scattered streams of small, slowly-moving carbonation bubbles are plainly visible. The small off-white head fades to but maintains a thin but not filmy layer. No lace. Pleasant to drink, but not really jazzing me. BückDich (4540), Boise, Idaho, USA Apr 4, 2006 Draught at Pizza Port Carlsbad Amber mahogany color, no head and a thin ring of lacing. The nose is sweet with coriander and hop notes, very citrusy. Whoa! The flavor is light pure grapefruit juice and pummelo. Not as tart but certainly as intense in the citrus department. Medium body and light caramel malts in the tail. Awesome citrusy finish. If you’re down for a glass of grapefruit juice mixed with amber ale, this be it. English Pale Ale? Hahahahaha.
