Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2002 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original Pizza Port location in Solana Beach, we searched high and low and combined 15 of our favorite hops which were added every 15 minutes to the boil. Somewhat darker than other Double IPA style beers, our beer oozes the hop goodness of pine needles, freshly squeezed citrus and ground spices which are only moderately tempered by a sweet malt finish. Thankfully, for all of us hopheads, we have decided to brew this beer more than once a year. Look for Hop 15 to make appearances from time to time when space permits us to brew this, one of our favorite ales.

Bottle. Moderate roasted and caramel aroma for the malt, heavy juniper and grapefruit peel for the hops, light soap for the yeast, and alcohol in the background. Head is average sized, creamy, off-white, with excellent thick lacing and is fully lasting. Color is light, murky orange/tan. Flavor is moderately sweet and acidic and a bit sour to start, then finishes moderately acidic and heavily bitter. Palate is medium, oily, has a lively carbonation and finishes moderately alcoholic and lightly dry. This is a great DIPA. Bold aromas , strong flavors and nicely balanced.

Pours a very hazy dark orange color with a thick dense white head. The aroma is not particularly stong, as in other DIPA’s. Smells mildly of hops and citrus. It has a real good mouthfeel, light and fizzy from the carbonation. This does pack a powerful wallup though! It’s imediately bitter from the hops slightly giving way to some sweet fruits and then to a lot of pine needles and earth. But the bitterness comes back in full force in the finish. A very interesting beer, full of bitter hop flavor.

Bottle, with Alaskanwarren and Traci. Copper with a bit of chill haze that goes away after warming up a bit. Lots of dense just off-white head. Musky citrus and mango aroma, green onion, nice touch of caramel. Fresh juicy hop flavor, lemony, pithy, brisk, a little vanilla sweetness. Very light and fruity, surprisingly drinkable for the strength. (And as it turned out later, a nice foil for a habanero-sauced burgers.)

Pours a hazy orange colour with almost no head at all. Aroma is filled with mango, orange, grapefruit, tangerine and some pine. Flavor really dominated by exotic fruit and hops. Some peaches, mango, grape and pine can be found. A bit sweet but ends with a long biitter finish.

Bottle from Beermerchants. Hazy brown, tiny film of a head. Strong aroma. Lots of grapefruity hops in the nose. Plenty of malt to play along with the hoppy kick. Lacks a little extra wow-factor. Clever, but not amazing.

Bomber. Pours an amber color with a thin head. Spotty lacing. Aroma of fragrant floral, citrus and tropical fruit hops in appley malts. Moderate resiny pine and grapefruit hop bitterness cuts into malts which are kind of sweet, but clean. Some chalkiness on the finish. Another great Cali 2IPA.
