Lothore (276), California, USA Apr 26, 2008 A- Pours a cloudy peach hue with almost no head to speak of.
S- Smell is dominated by citrus hops, very aromatic and a joy to smell.
T- Taste is a barrage of hops, a mixture of pine and citrus with a bitter back end that would leave even the most extreme hop head stunned.
M- Fairly viscous with a good amount of carbonation.
D- Fairly drinkable, the high abv and bitterness detract a bit but its so damn tasty it’s hard not to drink. ironchefscott (341), portland, Oregon, USA Apr 26, 2008 a good double IPA.....seemed better when it was only a seasonal beer....
but citrusy nose and tons of malt flavor to back it up and make it 10.5%
a good but not great DIPA
still kicks the ass of most east coast IPA’s though! durhambeer (1187), Durham, USA Apr 23, 2008 Updated: Dec 17, 2008Hazy amber pour with nice creamy golden head. Sweet, hoppy, malty nose. Aromas of tropical fruits such as mangos and papaya. Flavor showed bitter hops, caramel, grapefruit peel, and present alcohol. Waxy palate. Good stuff. Rogueone (506), I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA Apr 23, 2008 Thanks ogglethorp. Beautiful orange pour, frothy white head with a tinge of orange-ness to it. Fragrant bouquet of pine and citrus, and pleasantly following through on flavor. Beer was intense, but very well-balanced. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Would have only been better if it had been named the Pen 15. beerbill (1918), Laurel, New York, USA Apr 22, 2008 I thankfully have 2-22 oz. bottles of this wonderful beer courtesy of Secret Santa & The Epeeist. Pours a cloudy orange gold with a moderately large linen white head that lasted through most of the glass and left partial lacing. Huge aroma of grapefruit and pine, but the citrus is much stronger than the pine. The flavor is equally good with a solid, strong malt backbone to support the powerful citrussy hops. The bitterness of the hops is strong, but not overwhelming, and balances well against the sweetness of the malt. This is a delicious beer, and I am very glad I have a second bottle on hand!
MadMan (497), Tempe, Arizona, USA Apr 21, 2008 Bottle. Didn’t think I bumped this one on it’s way out of the fridge but she came out on me as I slowly pried the lid off. The resultant pour was chunky with sediment and a darker orangy amber like color with a fairly large beige head. Left a sticky mess on the counter as well as the bottle. Aroma consists of a multitude of various hop adjectives I’ve used before along with some fresh celery as well as celery salt and an herbal quality (something specific I can’t quite place yet). Flavor is on the sweeter side before the bitterness washes over the sides. Some bready malt laced with honey then a light dose of fruits. What I enjoy is the lack of a specific dominating character (i.e. pine, grapefruit) that comes with many of the style, they are present though and I’d never want to describe this beer without the words pine/citrus coming into play. Finish is bitter and long. Mouthfeel leans towards syrupy at times but has a nice and pleasant moderate carbonation. Good stuff. BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Apr 21, 2008 After popping the cap, the floral and pine spilled out of the glass...reminiscent of crisp mountain air. I’m not sure how you can rate the appearance less that perfect. A thick frothy pale yellow head sits perched atop a murky blood orange body. Lacing coats the glass all the way to the last sip. Strong grassy notes and pine begin your ride, then soften to ripened citrus. Fairly well balanced and drinkable. Would do again for sure!!! RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Apr 20, 2008 Pours cloudy amber gold with a frothy head. Strong hop aroma of citrus, pine, and sweet malts Initial taste of sweet malts, the bitterness shows up early and stays late, but not past its welcome. Very well balanced, and the malts and hops stay together throughout the entire drink. I’m having a great beer week, and this defintely adds to it. My first Pizza Port/Lost Abber. Won’t be my last.
