Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2002 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original Pizza Port location in Solana Beach, we searched high and low and combined 15 of our favorite hops which were added every 15 minutes to the boil. Somewhat darker than other Double IPA style beers, our beer oozes the hop goodness of pine needles, freshly squeezed citrus and ground spices which are only moderately tempered by a sweet malt finish. Thankfully, for all of us hopheads, we have decided to brew this beer more than once a year. Look for Hop 15 to make appearances from time to time when space permits us to brew this, one of our favorite ales.

draft at O’Brien’s in San Diego - Pours hazy copper with a substantial citrus hop aroma. The flavor is crazy hoppy, definitely on the hop intense side of even this style. It’s a good, crisp, strong hops, though I’d like it even more with a little better balance. It has a long, bitter finish.

IPAs and Double/Imperial IPAs have become a big favorite of mine, right up there with stouts and barleywines. This was part of an evening that was favored with several excellent examples. Nice deep amber/copper body with a foamy off-white head. Nose held strong pine and citrus hops laced with a sweet maltiness. That maltiness did battle with the hops in the flavor and lost the battle. This was not a balanced beer but that is not a negative. This is a full-blown Hophead’s dream. A refreshing, tasty, thoroughly enjoyable beer.

on tap-pours a retaining creamy white head and hazy gold color. Aroma is citrus-lemon/grapefruit hops (cascade, Amarillo). Taste is dry/raw citrus-lemon/grapefruit hops (cascade, Amarillo), faint malt, alcohol. Big. Sipping.

22oz. bottle by way of hellbilly. Sweet, fruity, citric aroma, plenty of fresh pine and grapefruit combined with a generous amount of honeyish, toasty malts, along with lighter notes of lemon, caramel and flowers. Translucent medium amber color with a fine, off-white head that lasts, generating a thin sheet of intricate lacing. Very nicely balanced flavor profile, with a pronounced malt undercurrent providing a sweet, malty, toasty framework for the massive dosage of citric, piney, floral, fresh, grassy hop flavor and equally huge bitterness, this increasing towards the finish, blending with burst of pineapple sweetness, doughy yeast and peppery alcohol, and thereafter drying out considerably. Creamy, smooth and warming on the palate, has a thin feel to it that accentuates the resinous hop quality. Full-bodied to be sure. Nicely done.

650 ml bottle from Bevmo. Pours a slightly cloudy rich copper color with a one finger off-white head that last a while. The aroma is strong and layered with citrus fruits (mostly grapefruit, some lemon and a little lime.) The flavor, like the aroma, showcases the citrus fruits, but it does not stop there--also apparent is vanilla, caramel, pine and cotton candy. All these flavors are set in a biter hops backdrop that makes for a wonderful complexity. The mouthfeel is full, smooth and creamy. The finish is long and sweet with vanilla and hops. Overall: One of the great San Diego IPA’s. Recommended.

[957-20071212] 1pt6floz (c/o blankboy, w/ him, GregClow, HogTownHarry, jerc, tupalev). Sweet navel citrus hops aroma. Hazy, dark orange amber body with a small medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Hoppy citrus continues in flavour with toasted malt and a bitter finish. Medium body creates bitter aftertaste breath. Great hoppy brew, hidden alcohol. (9/4/7/3/16) 3.9

[1898B-20081213] 1pt6floz bottle. Zippy zesty citrus oils aroma with lots of lemon pip hops and tangerine. Hazy, dark orange body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Orange hoppiness flavour is a bit rough and boozy. Medium-full body is noticeably boozy. Quite enjoyable. (8/4/8/4/17) 4.1

Dark amber cloudy with lots of floaty chunks. Great pineapple aroma. Fruity flavor has tons of hops without being abrasive.

In short: An overly sweet sugary and alcoholised beer saved by a splendid hopping. Very good but could have been much more.
How: 22 oz bottle, thanks to my Secret Festivus.
The look: Cloudy orange body with a small off-white head
In long: Nose is very aromatic, as fruity (citrus, grapefruit, orange, etc.) as it is foresty. Taste is a bit of a let-down. As expected from a beer using 15 varieties of hops the hop profile is pretty complex. Much like the nose the hop profile covers all the fruity and foresty flavours you’ve ever encountered in american hops and then some. Malt profile however was not my thing. At 10+% and with a truckload of hops this beer needed a ton of round and rich caramelized malts. Instead I got treated with sugary crunchy honeyed maltiness. The alcohol had nowhere to hide and was very apparent. Too sweet and alcoholised I just couldn’t take big sips. This beer is too much for its own good. Part of it I really like and part of I didn’t care for. In a perfect world this beer would have had a richer maltiness ...and also in a perfect word George Bush Sr would have been infertile.
