GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 19, 2007 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, blankboy, jerc, mabel and tupalev - blankboy’s bottle. Slightly hazy sunset amber with a small head. Aroma - hoppy as hell, that’s all you need to know. Medium body. Flavour is o.t.t. with the hops at first, but it starts to come into balance, with some sweet malts coming through to battle with the huge resiny hops. Big, warm finish. Me like. ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Dec 19, 2007 Cloudy orange colour with an off white head. Hoppy, piney bitter aroma with peach fruity notes. Quite hoppy flavor, again with a piney bitterness and a light fruity note. heylrule (46), Maryland, USA Dec 18, 2007 good pour white head, orange body. Very hoppy, slightly carbonated. Over all I was a little let down, but worth a try. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Dec 18, 2007 Bottle (22oz). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc, mabel and tupalev, blankboy’s bottle. Most of the other found this "harsh" - I thought it was about right for a DIPA, if perhaps a little past fresh. Cloudy orange pour with a decent frothy off-white head. Aroma - ah, hops - acidic and funky, citrus/resin trailing behind, framed by a decent juicy malt body - to my nose 3-dimensional, aggressive, and gooood. The taste seems a little more toasty malt-forward than I expected from the nose, but a deep and powerful dryly bitter back-tongue coating of resiny hops kicks in quickly, and sticks around quite a while ... I eventually realized this this was also pretty boozy, but it took a while for that 10.5% ABV to get my attention - briefly - away from the hops. Solid chewy body, quite strongly acidic for the style, only moderately carbonated, and it has a long, long bitter finish - and afterlinger too. Excellent, just what I was craving - gotta love the ’Port! OldMrCrow (1179), Seattle, Washington, USA Dec 17, 2007 Bomber.
Pours a rich orange with a modest head. Powerful orange-peel hops aroma with ample herbal tones as well, caramel malts coming through. The flavor is elegantly balanced between gently sweet and substantial caramel malty tones (but not falling into the cloying IIPA trap) and lovely pine-resin grapefruit hop goodness, leafy on the close, mouth-drying on the tongue and alcohol warmth down the throat. Smooth, full mouthfeel, rich and oily but not offensively sticky.
I’ve been in a rut with IIPAs and even IPAs lately, getting a little bored, I suppose, and maybe this boredom dulls my ability to tell a 4.4 from a 4.0. But whatever my inclination toward this style might be at the moment, this is clearly a superb beer. It might even be the rare IIPA that can stand some aging. That would be a fun experiment...
lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA Dec 17, 2007 Pours a beautiful golden-orange color with a finger of white head. Aroma of pine resin, grapefruit, and tropical fruits with a slight caramel backing. Slight notes of toasted grain come out as the beer sits. Flavor is nicely piney, with citrus notes and a slightly sweet malt backbone. Slight alcohol burn. Body is fairly syrupy but still retains a nice dry finish. A really nice double IPA. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 16, 2007 Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, GregClow, Mabel, and Jerc, courtesy of blankboy. Nice hops aroma - very strong, oily, and resiny. Nice dark hazy orange, small white head. Very strong hop taste, syrupy, oily and lots of alcohol (and hop) burn. Packed full of flavour with enough malt behind it, but I found it a tad harsh, which is odd since these things usually blow me away. A very good beer with a few rough edges. jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 16, 2007 Updated: Jan 8, 20092008-12-13. Lightly hazy body with a good sized beige head. (4+) . Aroma of citrusy hop, and tangerines initially seems to diminish. Modest malt base, and touches of alcohol. Lightly resiny. (7+) Flavour is quite hoppy but not particularly bitter. Modest resin throughout is dominant character, with a sweetish malty core that has glimpses of caramel. Sweet citrus notes are there to be found but take some effort. Smooth medium to full bodied palate is on the lighter side of carbonation. (4+) Pretty solid but could use just a touch more complexity perhaps? That said, this bottle from Alaska may not be as fresh as possible either, who knows. 7/4/8/4/16-17 Bottle, Brown Jug, Anchorage
Dec 2007. Bottle. Orange body, very small white head (3+). Very hoppy aroma, green and resiny. (7+) Quite bitter, lots of green leafy hops, moderate resin, bit rough in the back of the throat. A nice IPA but it really needs more of the citrusy hops for my liking. Average palate. 7/4/7/3/16 - 3.7
