Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2002 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original Pizza Port location in Solana Beach, we searched high and low and combined 15 of our favorite hops which were added every 15 minutes to the boil. Somewhat darker than other Double IPA style beers, our beer oozes the hop goodness of pine needles, freshly squeezed citrus and ground spices which are only moderately tempered by a sweet malt finish. Thankfully, for all of us hopheads, we have decided to brew this beer more than once a year. Look for Hop 15 to make appearances from time to time when space permits us to brew this, one of our favorite ales.

<!-- i -->Hand-bottled #65.<!-- /i --> Reddish-brown body, medium cream head. Sweet aroma imparted with alcohol, toast, and touches of butterscotch, in addition to piney, grapefruity hops. Caramely, toasty body with citrusy, resiny hops, a bit stale and probably less bitter and potent than they were when the beer was fresh. Dense flavor profile; alchol nearly undetectable. Good but lacks character. A bit too conventional for the style.

From some generous person’s growler at ’07 DLD. Clear orange colored beer with a thin, off white head. Huge fresh hop nose with tons of sharp pine resins and perfume. Juicey citrus flavors with grapefruit, orange and tangerine, plus the pine resin, peach, and light toast. Lots of grapefruit zest in the finish. All this on just enough malt foundation to tempt balance. Very nice hop head beer.

750 ml bottle. Clear orange with a nice greenish head. American hop aroma. Chinook? Nice sherry flavor note. Malty and thick. Big hoppy flavor. Great. Enjoyable.

Muddy rust. Scarce ring of slowly moving bubbles. Softly thick, flat palate. Adequate, hop dominant aroma of perfumey lemon zest, apple, honey suckle, spruce tips and underlying notes of wood and coconut. Initial chewy hop onslaught followed by vague spruciness, wood, and mint. Dirtily yeasty, though. Long, numbing finish of prickly pine needles and maple coated malt sweetness. Long minty alcohol vapors and a splash of phenols. Dirty yeast, mudddled aroma and flavor, and lack of hop brightness & hop burps hurt the overall score here. Moreover, the fact that this so highly varies from batch to batch, where it ranges from medicore to phenomenal, is also disappointing.
