Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2002 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original Pizza Port location in Solana Beach, we searched high and low and combined 15 of our favorite hops which were added every 15 minutes to the boil. Somewhat darker than other Double IPA style beers, our beer oozes the hop goodness of pine needles, freshly squeezed citrus and ground spices which are only moderately tempered by a sweet malt finish. Thankfully, for all of us hopheads, we have decided to brew this beer more than once a year. Look for Hop 15 to make appearances from time to time when space permits us to brew this, one of our favorite ales.

Bottle. Pours very cloudy amber with a decent off white head. Aroma of grapefruit, mango and some sweet malt. Taste is grapefruit, pine and some sweet malt, but not much. This tastes of almost pure hops. Great bitterness that lingers on for a while. Big body, a little hot from the alcohol. Good stuff. I love SoCal IIPAs.

Sampled at Lupulin Slam III, 2006. Darker clear amber with an off-white head. Great piney grapefruit hop aroma. Flavor is a total blast of fresh, vibrant hops - just an attack of pine, grapefruit and caramel. Pleasantly sweet, plenty of bitterness but not overly bitter. Full, round and creamy with moderate carbonation. Really good stuff!

22 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquor - Pours a clear copper color with a one finger thick off white head. Nice lacing. Soft, tiny bubble carbonation. Has a wonderful sweet floral, pine, and citrus hop aroma! Flavor is loaded with hops and a nice bit of caramel malt sweetness. Mouthfeel is thick and chewy. Alcohol is noticeable toward the finish. Medium to full body. A fantastic beer.

Wonderful hop bomb for a hop head like yours truly. The body’s orange/copper and it has a frothy off-white head. I got a big hit of sharp pine needles followed rapidly by grapefruit, earth, pineapple, and zest of lemon. Delighted by the hops, I still managed to pick up a sweet maltiness in the flavor, smooth, but soon buried under heaps of hops, causing me to split my lips whilst grinning ear to ear. The finish is dry and profoundly bitter, the pine in the forefront. Great beer!

Clear and copper colored with a frothy, sticky head.Big grapefruit and pine aroma with some underlying juicy malt. Excellent resinous hop flavor, so smooth but so palate destroying. Great balancing malt flavor and bitterness. Low perceived alcohol. There is a small metallic note but this is otherwise a world class ale.

On Draught @ Pizza Port Solana Beach, California. I tasted this beer out of the bottle a few weeks ago but it was very old and in bad condition so I didn’t review it. I’m glad I was able to find it. Dark Orange. An incredible pure hoppiness in the aroma with hints of cherries, candied fruits, melon and honey. An extremely hoppy beer with an enormous hop bite and bitterness. Fifteen different varieties of hops seems extreme, although Bristol’s version is made with twenty-nine different varieties. The hop flavor is suprisingly well balanced and all in all, hard to identify but it is balanced by a gigantic honeyed fruit and caramel malt body. Intense and wonderful. A nice pint to end the night.

This is a profound experience. Incredible aroma. Very nice hops. Strong flavors. For someone like me, the Pizza Port mystique has been allusive. And when I got my chance to taste, the hype lived up to its reputation. This is a powerful IPA without any sense of over powering sweet aftertaste. Lovely.
