BrotherGrendel (186), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 16, 2008 Clear dark amber-brown hue, nice pillowy head. Aroma is subtle with caramel malts, peat, grassy tones, fruits, and a hint of sour/tartness. Flavor is uninspiring with caramel and toast malts mixing with light hops. Palate is a bit thinned-out with decent carbonation. Overall, this falls short of expectations for the style, lacking in basic malt profile. Nik925 (149), California, USA Jul 5, 2008 GREAT MALT!
Thats what really stands out, there is no aroma noticeable until you get into it, what an awesome body with the booze hiding the behind that great malt carmel. hapjydeuce (579), Carlsbad, California, USA Jan 20, 2008 On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Low head formation, just some carbonation and a hazy light maroon color. Malty aroma with raisin and other dark fruit notes, with some smoke as well. Flavor is less impressive, consisting of earth, smoke and wood. The finish is disappointing, I got a taste of ash and cigarettes with a sweet boozy end. Give me an Alesmith Wee Heavy, please. doubleo (825), San Diego, California, USA Jan 20, 2008 On-tap at PP C’Bad but its a PPSC brew. Pours dark brown with red highlights. Creamy off-white head leaves a bit of lace. Smells malty sweet with some red fruits. Tastes sweet, with red fruits, malts and booze. Thick, but not too thick. Very nice carbonation. Recommended if your into Scotch style ales at all. BBB63 (3810), La Porte, Indiana, USA Dec 5, 2007 2007 PP SAF: Reddish brown hue with a fading frothy head and some lace. The aroma has notes of caramel, biscuit, rye, smoke, pear, plum, and slight peppery spice. The taste starts quite sweet and spicy with a constant layer of peat smoke. Fruity and woody note come in and out. Also seems a bit boozy after a bit. The mouth feel is lush and sticky, soft and warming. Not bad but seem too young and brash.
