CaptainCougar (4665), Rockville, Maryland, USA Sep 29, 2008 Pours a transparent bright copper amber with a thin, spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet toasty, grainy German malts and some caramel toffee with a touch of lager yeast character. Body starts with good fullness and sweet malty notes balanced with a crisp noble hoppiness and some mild oxidation before a smooth, bittersweet finish. A pretty true to style and drinkable heller bock. hopdog (4659), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 24, 2008 12oz bottle acquired in trade with valpoaj (thanks!). Poured a medium orange color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, honey sweetness, and toasted grains. Tastes of toasted caramel, some honey, and a little bready. JorisPPattyn (4526), Antwerpen, Belgium Mar 30, 2008 Good yellow-orange head over orange-foxy beer. Little chocolatey, point of ureum in the nose, whiff of hops, and precious little sugars for a Bock... Bit leafy, even grassy. Bitter chocolate, harsh hops dominate more chocolatey malts. Not very refined. Unripe banana peel, bit of orange flavour. Rainwater quality, soft water, but not watery; slick. Harsh-hoppy. No German Bock ever had half this amount of iso-alpha’s. Better choice of hops might have made this succeed on its own merits. Thanks to Dave A. acrdz (4406), Boulder, Colorado, USA Mar 24, 2008 Oh yeah, good stuff. Big sweaty corn and sharp, dried wheat and barley nose. Crisp, moderately hoppy, a bit sharp, but also very fresh and mildly sweet with a bit of honey flavor, just what you want in a maibock. It’s nothing great, but it’s nothing terrible either, and these days I’m in a maibock mood. Cornfield (4343), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA May 4, 2008 Pours a bright golden orange body with a sustained off-white head. Light aroma of sweet grainy malt, lightly toasted, and, alas, a splash of mineral water. The latter disappears from the flavor and is replaced by a moderate floral/grassy bitterness that keeps the sweet malts in check. Actually, a fairly decent drink if, perhaps, a bit lightweight for a bock. Binny’s Beverage Depot, Orland Park, IL
