Commercial Description:
St. Benedict of Nursia lived in the late 5th to early 6th centuries. Legend has it while living in solitude, he was befriended by a raven that later saved his life. He is most remembered for writing the Rule of St. Benedict that, among other virtues, teaches humility. Inspired by this Rule we humbly offer St. Benedict’s Winter Ale, a hand-crafted ale using generous amounts of dark roasted malts and the finest noble hops for a robust warming flavor.

This was a bit of a pleasant surprise, as I have tried several beers from this brewer that failed to meet expectations. Not a robust aroma, but a nice fresh aroma. This beer seemed a little understated for this style, but made up for that with a very smooth refreshing palate and a rather clean light finish. It isn’t without complexity but you notice the smooth mellow character rather than the often bitter and bold notes of this style.

Pours brown/amber with tan head. Sweet smelling with clove. Flavor is of roasted and caramel malts, fruit, brown sugar, spice, and molasses. Tastes a little like a dark version of a Belgian?

Pours to a dark brownish-black with thin tan head that lingers a short time and leaves little lacing. Nose is muted but a pleasant mixture of licorice, dark fruit and molasses. Mouthfeel is a tad on the thin side, but also malty sweet, and the taste accentuates the flovors found in the nose. Never caught any alcohol, though not terribly surprising at 6.2%. Okay finish. Not bad, but not great

(12oz bottle thanks to cavie) Pours a dark amber with decent head and good lacing. Not much in the nose but there are some sweet malts and alcohol. The taste surprisingly shows the alcohol as well with brown-ale like malt profile.
