Commercial Description:
Kansas City's great amber ale is sweeping through the Midwest again. Munich and European crystal hops and grains grown here in the heartland give Tornado Red Ale aggressive hoppiness followed by a rich, smooth malt flavor. It's the flavor that won the Silver Medal at the Great American Beer Festival, and only Pony Express has it.

This pours the color of a well polished penny with a (momemtarily) pillowy white head. The aroma is a sweet caramel malt topped with some herbal hoppiness. Smooth to drink, it’s got a grainy, sweet maltiness that’s well balanced with the hop bitterness. Depending on the abv (not listed), this could be a good session ale.

Dark copper color with a moderate light beige head. Caramel and mild toasted malt aromas. Toasted malt flavor dominate with some toasted biscuits and mild brown sugar. A mild green hop bitterness comes in late. Another average amber.

Medium amber colored body. The aroma is sweet caramel and some peanuts. The taste has some roasted peanuts and some toast. This is definitely better than the older incarnation of Pony Express Amber.

12oz bottle. Medium red amber color. Medium sized white foamy head, with decent lacing. Aroma is malty, sweet and cardboard. A medium bodied amber. Malts are fruity and sweet, Lots of cardboard and wet dog flavors. A little too sweet. A little too thin tasting. Bah, Yet Another Awful Amber (YAAA) I think I might start using that as an abbreviation. I had so many of them it might save some verbiage. Mouthfeel is thin. Finish is crisp and thin. Aftertaste is slightly sweet and cardboard.

12-oz. bottle from tjthresh. Pours amber with a thin edgy and patchy off-white head, poor attempt at lacing. Aroma is caramel malt (biscuit, cereal, meal) and yeast (dough, sweat) with some floral hoppy notes, brown sugar near the end. Mild sweetness that fades as the medium acidity and bitterness take over, caramel malt body with yeast and spicy hops at the end. Light bodied, fizzy and spicy palate.

In the bottle from Dirty John’s. Orange red in color with a thin white head. Very mild toasted caramel aroma, but not much else that I can pick out. This is watery and fizzy. As a filler, soy does not seem to do much in the beer. Just adds graininess like any other adjunct, it seems to me.

Frothy head with a rich and creamy mouthfeel. Found it to have a slight off-flavor, which was kind of stark. But after a few swills it seemed to lessen. Thought it was somewhat biscuity and bread-like, leaving the mouth dry and puckered. Not bad, but curious.

Interesting amber, but never really comes together and remains unbalanced throught the entire bottle. Has a vitamin bottle aroma, with some odd fruit flavors. Grainey texture, with some sweet caramel maltiness, and some fruity hop characteristics. I don’t know what to say about this one, other than it is hard to finish a Pony Express beer.
