Bottled. Pitch black opaque colour, mediumsized brown head. Coffee, chocolate and roasted malts in aroma. Sweet caramel, some plum, dark chocolate and hints of syrup in flavour. One it gets a bit warmer also clove, licorace and some milder spices get through in the flavour. I enjoyed it much.

(Bottled) Very dark brown with a smallish but lasting, beige head. Aroma of old coffee, sourish, roasted malt and hints of licorice. Very syrupy-sweet, slightly sour and sugary flavor. Medium-bodied, very sticky-sugary palate with low carbonation. A quite awfully sugary brew, no matter how you look at it.

Black, ok head. Some chocolate and fruit in the aroma. Very sweet, some licorice in the finish. Much too sweet to be pleasant, a big disappointment for being a stout.

Almost black, brown head. Weak sweet aroma. Flavor is very, very sweet, sugary and not much else. Very disappointing to be a stout.

Yellowish dark brown head, not stable; deep dark brown beer. Sweet nose, fruity like blueberry or bramble jam, and hazelnut paste. Terribly sweet, though less than remembered, with a harsh roasted edge. Retronasal pure worts, as a German Kraftmalz. Liquorice, and a lingering, non-hoppy bitterness. Heavy roasted burning MF, good body, syrupy. Typical Belgian sweet stout of the old stamp. I think, nevertheless, that the ABV has been raised somewhat during the last decennia, and it certainly has made it more balanced than before. If Philippe tasted sour, he had a bad bottle.
