Commercial Description:
Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.

Bottle. BB4 C4 2009. Poured a little too vigorously. Cloudy dark orange-amber with fluffy white head. Pieces of sediment. Sour lemon cream aroma. Starts creamy and smooth then sour with a harsh heavy doughy yeast and hop finish. Smooths out as you drink but retains the heavy mouth feel.

Yellow with a huge head. Nice aroma of orange, coriander and citrus. The flavours are very fresh, sweet, fruity and floral. Excitingly refreshing and a personal weakness of mine.

On tap at Sharp Edge. A slightly hazy milky golden color with a very small cream-colored head. Aroma of some fruity esters with a bit of a metallic rusty note and mild hops. This might be a bad tap because there is an overwhelming rust flavor. A nice undertone of fruity apple and pear with a really solid bitter finish. Good malt/hop balance. Finishes with a warming alcohol. Medium body.

Pours a cloudy yellow straw/brown with creamy off-white head and good lacing. Citrus, light fruit, apples, caramel, spice, lemon zest, and belgian sugars. Hints of banana, corriander, and biscuits. Finishes slightly sour. This is an excellent beer.

330ml bottle. Poured a murky brown dirty cloudy color, nice head and lace. Aroma of sugars, malts, carmel, fruits and hops. Taste of all of the above, falls into the usual belgian sweet taste. Smooth creamy finish. A nice Belgian ale.

I just got a bottle of this from Sam’s in Durham, chilled till a bit too cold. Lively carbonation, somewhat dark, hazy gold, very nice head- not quite rocky but left tenacious lace on the glass. At first, only sticky sweet malt on the nose, but it was very cold- in a few minutes the mild bananna and faintest earty hops came through. Taste is different from what the nose would intimate- actually dryer and hoppier- a pleasant surprise as I don’t like out of balance sweetness. Mouthfeel is quite smooth and creamy. As it warms up, it strikes me as a nice cross of biere de garde and saison-Entirely drinkable and will revisit this one.

Pours a somewhat pale orange-gold with a small but creamy white head and suspended yeast chunks. Nose is very fruity, like a sweet white wine, with hints of pear, along with an flowery orange blossom honey sweetness. Pretty nice and full on the palate, slightly sweet overall but with a nice straw hop kick towards the finish, with a chalky yeast bite. Creamy malt shake mouthfeel. Pleasant.
