Commercial Description:
Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.

Massive massive head, pure white with a foamy, creamy top layer. Dull orange in colour; a little cloudy. Medium strength nose of equal parts malt and hops. A touch of sweetness but aromas tend more to the hops. Great to taste with a wall of thcik flavours early, again herbally and spicy, before flattening out to reveal a very well balanced beer. The spicy hops is a real standout and is quite powerful as well. Reminds me of the excellent TiJ beers from Amsterdam.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Brownish yellow colour, slightly hazy, with firm beige/yellow head. Fruity, sweetish nose with notes of mango, pineapple and grassy hops, slightly sweaty. Malty, grassy taste with notes of tropical fruit, rather sweet in the middle and with generous doses of grassy, spicy hops in the finish. The hops are a bit masked by the malty sweetness in the aroma, but come through very nicely in the taste. Overall a rather nice beer, a bit different form many Belgian ales (which feels very refreshing).

Golden orangey clouded hue with a large foamy head. Orange , yeast and malt on the the nose. This follows through to the flavour. Has a bitter sweet finish. A decent beer

25cl bottle at the Bishop’s Arms, Malmo. An interesting beer. Pours cloudy with a small head and gives off a great aroma - orange peel and vanilla - very light and fluffy on the nose. As expected, hops dominate the flavour. It’s bitter but has a nice balance of dryness and sweetness and I found it very refreshing. The finish is lipsmackingly dry. Overall, it reminded me of Duvel.

The head is nice on this hazy golden beer. The aroma is very hoppy just like the flavour, that has weak notes of malt and apple and a slight sweetness. The finish is long and bitter in a nice way.

(Rating #1057)

Bottle looks the same as picture but says "ALE" instead of BIER. Bottle is also outdated, which I did not realize at the time of purchase. Best before 9/03. With all that said, beer was not bad. Sweet, cider like taste with ables and some citrust. Decent. Will have to try a fresh bottle for sure.

750 ml. bottle. This is a beautiful beer with a clear golden body under a bib bubbly white head that demonstrates excellent duration and lace. There’s some bready yeast that wafts up from the glass, with a nice spicy hoppiness that follows close behind, and finally some light fruity notes. Lively carbonation, a light body, and a sparkling clean palate combine nicley. The lightly sweet malt characteris juxtaposed to a mild bitterness that leaves a very satisfying lingering dry finish. Much lighter and cleaner than most Belgian Strong Ales, but I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing. It almost has more of the character of a Trippel in my opinion. Quite refreshing, and a great beer for summer.
